That makes it more likely they could visually confirm what it is. I think it's pretty certain that they didn't survive. Even if the sub was found intact they only had enough oxygen to make it till today.
Sadly I think its pretty clear that they probably perish a while ago, we have no idea what happened and if they lost power they weren't going to withstand the cold. Maybe there was a breach, even if they were alive it was going to take a while to get back to the surface so even if they found them this morning intact time had ran out.... Going this way must have been unimaginably horrible....
You'd think it would be pretty easy to visually tell what is new stuff and disturbances on the seabed vs old stuff that's been covered by 100 years of silt.
Yeah I think so too. Even if they could've found them a day or two ago it sounds like rescue was going to be very difficult. There aren't many subs that can get to that depth and it would be very difficult to dock to it and open the hatches.
This is just me but trapped in the dark in a tiny capsule is something that I couldn't handle. I'm clausterphobic and probably couldn't handle the trip down even if everything went fine. If for whatever reason I were to do something like that I would want to bring a cyanide capsule rather than slowly suffocate.
IIRC, even if it lost power there were several failsafes that would allow the sub to surface. Could be wrong. The only hope of rescue was if it somehow got tangled up in the wreckage and was able to be found quickly and freed, but given when they lost contact with the sub it sounds like an implosion event before they reached the wreck, so they got instantly liquified and certainly didn't suffer.
I was hopeful but logically couldn't see a way this had a happy ending, would have been really interesting to hear about their experience and what happened.
The wreckage snag was the scenario I assumed was happening and had hoped they could be saved. It seems weird that they would have ruptured unless there was an issue with the sub itself...which sounds feasible given some of the shady stuff that's coming out.
Given they needed comms to guide them to the wreck, they would have aborted the dive soon thereafter. Doubtful they would have just continued on as they wouldn’t find it. We already know it got lost down there looking for the Titanic with comms on a previous trip.
I'm pretty sure the sub had cameras inside, I wonder if footage could potentially survive the pressure.....
If the sub didnt implode it's likely a sarcophagus now. If the structure is still intact it could be sitting on the bottom of the ocean for years until corrosion causes it to implode. Even if there is nothing around humans have a lot of microbes on and in them so those would likely start decaying the body shortly after death.
Coast guard just confirmed they found debris of the sub at the ocean floor, 500m from the titanic side.
From what I've read, at that depth that would've meant instant implosion of the entire sub due to the water pressure (and with the debris they just confirmed, that's likely what happened). There's an interview from last year with the scientist that was on-board this time, he says they would die long before oxygen runs out due to hypothermia, as it's only 4c at that depth and they'd freeze out quickly.
If it was an implosion then it was instant, they probably didn't even realize what happened. Assuming they weren't aware of a possible failure that caused the breach and were already terrified.....
Yea it's the best outcome fortunately, they at least didn't suffer for days. Just sucks how shady this company operated, like only installing a window licensed for 1300m depth and rejecting an offer to get one for 4000m.
Its actually impressive how they operated for years and people paid for this "attraction?"..... It should have never happened, it should have never been allowed to happen. I still can't believe people willingly stepped foot in that thing. The Titanic is fascinating, the movie and documentaries is all I need thou. No to mention Kate Winslet....
