Just about to conclude my first week here in Silicon Valley. So far, I don't regret at all for moving here from Austin. However, I do find it silly to argue "which state is better", because we inherently value different things.

For me, I don't value the size of my house that much. On the other hand, I put great value on good weather and proximity to mountain and beach. Of course, I hate state income tax, but the added income for moving here partially offsets it. Moreover, I couldn't give a rat's ass about liberal vs conservative politics. All in all, moving to NorCal has been great for my family.

One thing I do miss about Austin is the people. They seem to be more down-to-earth and overall nice. That's not the case here. But again, there are pros-and-cons, and you do what works for you.

A benchmark for any civilization is how the poor are treated, in which case CA over Texas by a mile, and I will be so happy when the 1% realize that no matter how many shills they hire to pollute social media with their propaganda, it's just not going to work any more. Then the plug gets pulled, the shills stop posting, and boards like CF can go back to having reasonable rational discussions about the important issues of the day.

You might find Berkeley having the same culture as Austin or vice-versa :-D

I'm reminded of the Terry Allen song Amarillo Highway
I'm partial to the Robert Earl Keen version though.

I don't hate Californians. I don't understand why they want to identify as Texans. I took exception to a New Yorker identifying as a Texan just in order to slag off Texas.

If you are claiming to be a bigger cowboy than me, because you play dress up on the weekends, you are kidding yourself.

Well, I think the fact that you feel the need to get in a pissing match over who's the biggest Texan doesn't help your cause. My Grandparents lived in Texas, both my Parents lived in Texas, all of my siblings were born and raised in Texas, and I was born in Texas, and lived there until I graduated college.

I'm a Texan, and don't need to meet your approval to be one. I've lived in NYC as well, and I was a Texan then too.

My friends who were also all from Texas were called Tex-Patriots then. Being a Texan is in my blood, and it's who I am. Whether you agree or don't, doesn't really change any of that.

You are the one in a pissing match. You brought it up to me when I was calling out mc. You obviously have some kind of feeling you aren't a Texan otherwise you wouldn't be so defensive. From what I can tell you are a first gen native Texan who left as soon as he could. If you want to claim Texan feel free. If you don't insult Texas while doing so I won't say chite.

He says while trying to cast doubt on how much of a Texan someone else is.

You have a strange grasp of facts. You brought up someone not being a Texas first in this thread. I called you on it. I haven't been defensive about it all. I just mentioned that it reminded me of the Terry Allen song.

I also don't think MC was insulting Texas, just dismissing the politics. I'm happy that Texas is more than just it's politics. He wouldn't be proud of being a Texan if he didn't appreciate it.

You called me on it? He lived in Texas for the minority of his life and never identifies with it in a positive light. Like when Tim Whatley converted to judaism for the jokes. Get over it, geez.

All I'm saying is that you aren't the final judge about who is and isn't a Texan.

I won't speak for mc mark, because he can do that for himself. I was just saying my observations on it.

One thing about Texas is that it has room for all kinds of folks. People like you, people like me, and people like mc mark.

^^Driver's license, tax return and tuition, only times anyone should really ever think about what state they're in (let alone from).

Agreed, except you guys loved it so much you left years ago.

For the purposes of this discussion it mattered in that someone was using it to increase their credibility by appealing to a self criticism. I eroded standing and credibility. Otherwise I generally never care.

Why do you even wanna be more Texan than the other guy?

Do you know how the rest of the civilized world sees a stereotypical Texan dude ?

It depends on where in the rest of the world. But I'm not really worried about the rest of the world. I do, however, appreciate the uniqueness of Texas, and the general cultural aspects of Texas that are worthy of appreciation.

I don't think it's about being more or less Texan than the next guy. It was about one guy claiming others weren't Texans when it isn't up to that one guy to choose who is and isn't a Texan.

Faulty criteria. LBJ wasn't less of a Texan when he left it in the 60's. Willie Nelson isn't less of a Texan because he lives in Hawaii.

True Texans??? Are we in 1943 Germany or 1st century Rome? Do we need rulers to measure each other's nose and hair color?

How old are you guys arguing over this stuff? I mean, does it satisfy your ego or self-identity to be somehow 'truer' or 'purer' than others?

My point wasn't that someone is more or less of a Texan. It was that one person in this thread started telling others whether or not they were or weren't real Texans.

I simply objected, as he is in no position to tell others who is and isn't. I dont' know why he appointed himself to that position. He isn't the St. Peter of Texas who allows people to either be or not be a Texan.

bigtexx need to learn this harsh lesson from Gov good hair

In a report from late 2020 in the wake of the presidential election, the Brookings Institution, a U.S.-based think tank, found that 71% of the GDP in America are run by Dems. 7 of the top 10 dependent states are controlled by GOP lawmakers.

Additionally, an April report from MoneyGeek also backed up Newsom's other claim, finding that seven out of the 10 states most dependent on federal assistance were red states: West Virginia, Mississippi, Alaska, Kentucky, Montana, Arizona, and Alabama. Around 52 percent of U.S. states that provided more to the federal government than they received were blue states.

Calif can boast that its universities are among the best in R&D, as evidenced the > 300 nobel prize winners the state has produced; 110 from Cal Berkeley, 84 for Stanford, 76 for Cal Tech , 27 for UCSD, 25 for UCLA, etc.

    Texas has 13

the dearth in R&D talents may have led to this recent move by Tesla
one can infer that there is not enough engineering talent in Texas to conduct R&D for a world class hi tech co such as Tesla.
