Per Bleacher Report: Teams and agents do not expect the Houston Rockets to keep the No. 20 pick. This would be a spot on the board where Houston would simply look for a future protected first-rounder in return. Personally, I think the draft has some interesting prospects at 20 and would be disappointed to give this pick away.
Which means they'll probably keep this pick. Nobody is going to give you a future first round pick for #20. Everyone wants picks out in the future as trade currency. If you want cheap young talent to fill out your roster then you can get bargains in the 2nd round for next to nothing. #20 should be used to draft the most athletic big or wing left on the board. Shoot for the moon on this one. That's what the late 1st round is meant for.
Staying at #20 make no sense for Houston. If we are going to add two more rookies to a roster already overloaded with developmental young talent, why not get the best talent u can? Trade up or trade out!
The value of pick 20 is marginally better than a 2nd round pick. It's been evident that Stone has an imbalanced roster and contract logjam coming up. Hopefully this was not just realized internally. This is a small bag of chips to throw in another trade, and that's about all, unless there's a player worth cutting/trading some existing guys for. We are at a stage where our last 3 years of draftees need to be sorted out to make space for the next phase.
If you can get a future first, sure I guess? Keep the pick, trade from the roster. Keep churning it over (the 8th-12th man). K.J. Martin Daishen Nix Josh Christopher Usman Garuba TyTy Washington, Jr. “Well we have Daishen Nix so trade the pick.” “Well we have TyTy Washington so trade the pick.” “Well we have Josh Christopher so trade the pick.” “Well we have Usman Garuba so trade the pick.” No.
Stone is such a sh#tty asset manager. Eric Gordon, PJ Tucker, a late 1st rounder for #20, which we’ll end up trading for an underwhelming return or end up using on a player with no development pathway. I’m just frustrated by Stone’s lack of ability to manage assets well or improve the team through trade. He better do something soon.
I'm assuming this is a trade up. Would be an excellent way to consolidate the roster jam and try to peel away a lottery talent. We've been hitting bombs in the late teens with Sengun and Eason. Wing/Forward have that log jam for development time, especially if the report about bringing in Brooks is true we must consolidate the roster. I'd be interested to see if 20 + Martin could get us back into the lottery.
Draft Kris Murray. He brings a need and by accounts judging by his twin, he would be a good culture guy.
I understand your thought process and it is solid. This year is a little different because of our new coaching staff and systems they will put in place. Garuba, Washington & Christopher could all be upgraded but do we really even know what we have in each of them? All have shown promising play. Don’t give up on the players because the problem was the process. Nix should not even make summer league roster, IMO. (What is crazy=> Nix’s stats in G league where much like Henderson’s at the same age)
In a perfect world yes you should always trade up to get quality over quantity. I don’t think anyone is arguing they shouldn’t use 20 to move up if that’s a deal that’s actually on the table which I very much doubt. However I’m not buying into this argument that we have too many young guys and there’s only so much PT to offer. The fact is if guys like Nix and Tate are getting minutes you have room on the roster to either move out young guys who aren’t improving fast enough, and get more chances at spots like 20 to get young players that might be better than everyone from TyTy to Nix to even Tate. Josh Christopher has no excuses for not beating out Nix by making it obvious in practice he’s better. You gotta be willing to move on from guys like that if they let guys like Nix beat them out. The Rockets and the fans shouldn’t think for 2 seconds that they don’t have room for another rookie.
i agree with you. I’m just saying we haven’t been cycling guys through. So until Stone shows he can move on from his former draft picks, we are in a roster crunch. Poor asset management.
A bummer that the Clips didnt lose an additional 2-3 games but I liked the trade thought process at the time considering what was available. Time to package KMJ/#20/Tate and get to 10 orcso.
Rather than trading for a future first, I'd much rather see them consolidate some of their assets. Could you combine this pick with other players and future picks to move up in the draft or add a young, high-quality player?
Several prospects will be available that our better than a few we already have. Would rather try and trade those dudes for future draft assets if can.
