I can see Altuve signing a hometown discounted deal, especially at his age. It's nearly impossible to imagine him in another uniform.

    Maybe: 3 yrs, $57M and 4th yr $11M w/ $3M buyout. $17M AAV, $60M over 3 seasons can make up to $68M.

As for Bregman, he WILL get at least equal to Bryant's 7yr $182M deal which $26M AAV if he wants it.

He may give a small hometown discount down to 6yr $150M but I doubt it and think it's unlikely

I actually would like them to work out an extension before next season.

Yep. I think Tucker makes more sense because he’s got 3 playoff runs rather than 2 and we have more OF prospects than IF so he’d be more valuable I’d think- but I’d be fine with that deal for Bregman.

Yeah/ Astros would save what- 10M a season if they made those deals.

Tucker to Cincy for Arroyo, Collier, and Marte. Maybe take back Wil Myers to replace Tucker this season. Those 3 prospects with Gilbert, Clifford, and the other guys who’ve broken out would make the position player side of the farm one of the best in baseball. Gilbert comes up to replace Tucker next year and they go spend a little coin on a LF in free agency (or roll with McCormick).

I think we all agree this team needs a 2017 or 2019 type splash deal.

By definition, there are very few players that meet that definition, and even fewer who may be available. Looking at which players meet those specifics and also plays for a team who's needs match up with the Astros prospects limits it even more.

It may be that instead of a top 5-10% player, this team will need to settle for 2 guys in the top 20-25%

Yep. I would prefer that to playing out the string with Tucker for 2.5 years and walking for a comp pick. No thanks. He likely has a ton of
value right now and if you could reset the farm system to be a real strength for 7-10 years you need to do it, imo. We still should be a okay off team if managed competently and healthy in August and September but next year we should be really good with a ton of room to spend.
Nobody has repeated as changes in 25 years for a reason and we are seeing that now. A slight reset/pivot while making the playoffs and rolling the dice to see where we can get to makes sense to me, this year.

    Embracing the unrealistic fantasy:
Tucker for Marte, Arroyo, Collier, and Myers
    Bellinger for Arrighetti and Dirden
    Giolito for Leon and Melton
    Hand for Paredes and Whitley

    2023 Playoff roster:
    2B Altuve
    LF Brantley
    3B Bregman
    DH Alvarez
    1B Abreu
    C Diaz
    RF Bellinger
    SS Pena
    CF Meyers
    Bench: Maldonado, McCormick, Dubon, Myers
    Rotation: Framber, Brown, Javier, Giolito
Bullpen: Pressly, Neris, Abreu, Maton, Hand, Stanek, Montero, France, Urquidy

    Top 10 prospects:
    Arroyo
    Collier
    Marte
    Gilbert
    Lee
    Clifford
    2023 1st rd pick
    2023 2nd rd pick
    Baez
    Loperfido

That’s 4 of the top ~70 prospects in the league. The big league team net for 2023 is better than before the deadline. For 2024 they have Gilbert to replace Tucker/Bellinger, Bielak/Garcia to replace Giolito, and money/internal options to address LF and the bullpen.

He is my DREAM acquisition. Always loved him, he's been among my favorite non-Astros for a while. He would be the best bat on the market if he really did become available. However, as others have said, it's never been the Cardinal way to trade away someone like him. If we land him, I would plug him at 1B and DH Abreu (since Goldy is the superior defender).
That being said, they are having their worst start to a season in a long time, so this is new territory (at least in recent years), so maybe they'll be different. And as others stated, perhaps they can sell this to their fans as a "pivot" rather than a rebuild.

St. Louis has Burleson, Baker, Gorman, and Donovan all as 1B options. They don't need position players, but their pitching could use a lot of new arms.

    Astros get
    1B Paul Goldschmidt

    Cardinals get
    RHP Luis Garcia
    RHP Spencer Arrighetti
    LHP Julio Robaina
    LHP Blake Taylor

That prospect package proposal would get laughed at. A pitcher who just had tommy John surgery, a 2nd tier pitching prospect, and a couple of throw-ins?

Well, I am higher on both Arrighetti and Robaina - given the seasons they're having they look like a #8 and #15, respectively. Garcia's prognosis would play a big part. If STL thinks they're getting 2021 ROTY-runner up Garcia, they may like it.
But at the same time, LMJ is an example of continuing to have arm issues post-TJS.

FWIW Baseball Trade Values has Garcia at 27.8 and Goldy at 20.8, LOL.

Prior to Garcia’s injury it would be a realistic trade, but as it stands there is no way STL would even consider it.

And if they sell others it will be OF where they have so much depth
If they decided to move Goldy, they would get offers WAY better than that, regardless of what anyone here, the Astros, or the Cards think about Garcia

It’s unclear that Bergman is actually a star still. I wonder how many of the people that wanted to sign Tucker to a ten year deal before the season still think that is a good idea. Crane had been money on extension decisions.

It doesn't really matter if it's unclear if Bregman is a star or not.

Kris Bryant had averaged 2.75 fWAR and 2.3 bWAR per season, with a max of 4.7 and 4.4 respectively the 4 years prior to signing his deal ( I extrapolated 2020 fWAR so based on 162 g) was he a star? Getting 7 yrs / $182M - $26M per year?

If Alex continues current pace for this season, he will have averaged 3.3 fWAR and 3.3 bWAR with a max of 5.5 and 4.5 over 4 seasons ( keep in mind this is 2020-2023 so is not artificially inflated by 2018 and 2019)

(Obviously he still has the remainder of this and all of next season to change this)

Bryant was 30 and Alex 31 for the 1st season, Maybe that means Alex only gets 6 years instead of 7 but there is no way he signs for less AAV than Bryant, especially with just how much contracts have grown in general the past 2 years.

Bryant’s deal was idiotic the minute it was signed and they couldn’t give him away now. He both isn’t good and barely plays. If you think that is the comp I hope Crane continues with his philosophy of being unbelievably selective on extensions. I’d also recommend not using the Rockies as a barometer for anything.

Exactly. That deal was a oops deal.
    Very poor by the Rockies.
There's no way Bregman gets over 20m with the way he is playing. Sorry. He is great at Def but needs to turn the bat around to get more. As we speak he is playing at a 15m rate per year if he is lucky

We should be looking at Luis Robert's and Lamont Wade Jr in trades.
