Why do some restaurants leave the calyx (the green bit on the strawberry) on it when they serve you the strawberries?

I get it, they may think it looks better...but wtf? Do you expect me to eat it?!

Well, I asked my wife and oldest son (who went to the HS culinary program) and they thought I was setting them up for a joke, and no matter what I said they laughed and asked me what the punch line was, so I guess the answer is that the calyx is a setup for a dad joke.

They're quite healthy and, yes, people do eat them.

Interesting, just read up on it. I had no idea you could eat that. Still don't want to though, I usually try to remove the stem as well.

Part of it just may have to do with removing it causes strawberries to spoil/mold faster, and like Buck said, you can eat it. I kind of like stems on strawberries when I eat them by hand because it kinda gives me a handle to eat them if I'm not eating them whole like some kind of barbaric tribesman. :D

Next thing you'll tell me is that it's bad company not to eat strawberries with a knife and fork.

They are. Southeast Asian cuisine uses them a bunch.

I think you're on to something, ATW's only complaining about restaurants because there he doesn't have servants to cut up his food for him

Is there a gastropub where you can inhale it's smoked fumes while eating banana peel foam?

Pfft. Just don't eat them like a muppet. I hear you have to act civilized at a restaurant, though. I try not to order anything with whole strawberries at restaurants, though, because using a knife and fork on a strawberry is a bit over the top for me and picking them up and eating them with your hand makes people look at you weird. It's a conundrum when you're just a regular Joe trying to mix with Buffies and Beauregards. Which, come to think of it is ironic since "Beauregard" literally means "beautiful gaze". But I digress ... lol.

That was like the time we had some consultants come in to work with us and we took them to a BBQ restaurant. They ordered the ribs and attacked it with a knife and fork. Had to tell them it was ok to use the hands. :D

How do you feel about leaving the tails on the shrimp in the pasta?

If it bothers you that much, you could always write them a letter...

One of my favorite songs! Originally written by Shuggie Otis when he was like 18. I was going to post NWA's Dopeman and "strawberry is the neighborhood ho", but this is far classier. lol.

Strawberry is the only town that does not have a saloon. It's true. In order to get any liquor you have to rob the General Store at gunpoint and force him to unlock the illegal moonshine business in the basement.
