Who’s better Jamal Murray or Tracy McGrady?

Depends on what u value more. Stats? Ring?

I think being one of the reason for the team that won a city its first ring gives Murray an edge.

 

Mcgrady is flat out the more talented player in his prime Orlando days and early Houston days.

Murray probably has the better mindset along with skillsets that are better suited to moden era, specifically his jump shot off the dribble and catch and shoot.

 

McGrady is one of the most talented players to every play in the NBA. Jokic has said he modeled his game after him. Sadly, he didn't have the personality to be a #1, but if he had Jokic as a partner, he'd probably be holding that hardware too.

 

And if Jokic had Murray and NOBODY else like the Rockets did whenever Yao and Tmac were moderately healthy at the same time, Jokic would have struggled just as much. That Denver team is stacked both with talent and just the RIGHT players. You can win with less talented role players when they all fit together. Denver has super stars, stars, and then star role players. It’s an insanely well crafted team. Aaron Gordon was the steal of the century.

Worth noting McGrady was only a 22ppg guy during his time as a Rocket.

His lack of a jumpshot was a killer. Sure, he averaged 30 for 2 seasons at the Magic (who had nobody else) - but aside from that....

Interestingly, the rules changes came in the middle of McGrady's career. The changes are the reason that the league is dominated by jumpshooting now.

 

Actually, the rules changes hit exactly when TMac arrived in Houston. Interesting to speculate how his game would have aged under the old rules. I'd guess he would have ended up as a post-up small forward, where he'd be able to isolate 1v1 and his injury slowdown would not have been as big of a hindrance.

Mcgrady's elite athleticism went down hill quickly after joining the Rockets. His first year he was still a top 7ish player in the league. But after, his explosion just wasn't there.

 

Murray reminds me a bit of Brandon Roy. Really smooth, but overall not too unlike any other good guard today. T-Mac and many of his peers were just way more aesthetically pleasing to watch though(probably Jordan Be Like Mike influence, but all with their own twists). To hell with all your advanced stats, nerds! They were just ballers ballers before nerds turned the NBA into watching the same robots competing against each other.

Nuggets are the best the NBA has to offer in terms of likability in play style and watch factor, but not going to lie, it's still hard to watch because not only do they still shoot too many 3s, it's a guarantee the opponent is going to shoot too many 3s. Watching long brick after long brick and an occasional lightly contested layup. Bro... It's just such a bore to watch....and i'm not just an old head for the past. Same thing applied to watching boring C's getting post ups all game long in the 90s. Like no one wants to watch those big goofy Georgetown big's ugly hooks all game long. Leave that to the highly skilled bigs and same applies to 3 point shooters today.

 

Exactly. It’s more interesting when teams play differently. Jokic and Butler are exciting in that they have atypical games and make it work. Harden+Morey were fresh in 2017 but then the entire league copied the 3pters +alleyoop game from us.

 

And yet Kobe Bryant claims T-Mac was the hardest player to guard.

 

T-Mac was more talented but Murray has heart.

 

That's just because Kobe was also a volume chucker - trying to make his own game seem better??

 

I don't recall Murray playing with CP3.....

 

Mcgrady couldn’t do it all himself. Murray certainly didn’t do it by himself. Besides Two different types of players.
