I think a global perspective is necessary when evaluating the impact of black slavery in the United States. A couple of facts to keep in mind:

1. Every ethnicity has been a slave at some point in world history. This is not unique to blacks in the USA.

2. In each and every major "melting pot" country, blacks are at or near the bottom in terms of wealth/income performance. USA, UK, France, South Africa all illustrate this point. So what is the real issue here? It doesn't appear to be specific to the USA's treatment of blacks or other races.

 

I'm not a supporter of reparations but slavery in the Ameicas was very unique in its brutally. From being ripped from our homeland, stripped of any of our culture to the work to the treatment such as punishment.

Not to mention it's just stupid. What happened here has nothing to do with anything else in terms of actual ramifications here.

Lots of slaves have been ripped from their homeland and culture and suffered violence. There's nothing unique about it to the African slave experience in the United States. Western Europeans were enslaved and sent into slavery in Islamic North Africa for hundreds of years.

All this is doing is creating a commission not actually paying reparations. It might not go any further than that.

 

This argument would be like saying “well a lot of people committed genocide so why should we care so much about the Holocaust.”

Reparations are pretty much necessary to help close the systemic divide. Cash payments aren't going to be the answer though, except in rare instances.
