I’m seeing Republicans including here decrying Trump’s indictment and rallying to his defense.

I’ll say this. If you really believe in limited government, think the Left has gone too far in culture war, if you really are a Conservative you should be all for Trump being prosecuted and never returning to office.

Lindsey Graham said it best in 2016 that if Trump wins it will hurt the Republican Party bad and they will deserve it. Just because Trump is a fighter, has a fanatical base, and pisses off the Libs doesn’t mean he is helping your cause. Without Trump it’s unlikely that Biden wins in 2020. It’s unlikely that Democrats take the House and Senate. It’s unlikely that they flip several governships. It’s unlikely that Republicans only win the House in 2022 by the narrowest of margins.

The Republican Party and many conservatives in general are no longer defining themselves by principle but instead by what they oppose. This is why we see so much raging about “wokeness” and “socialism” without defining what they really stand for. They are an opposition party that only can define itself through opposition.

That great for grievance and doom scrolling on Twitter but it’s terrible for governing or winning a wide based popular election.
