I didn’t see a thread on this but as someone who works in housing projects including renovations of buildings as old as this one this is disturbing.

I haven’t seen anything regarding the specific cause of this but my guess is that the exterior structure is masonry walls and that water
Infiltration over decades weakened it leading to the collapse.

What is really disturbing is that there still might be people trapped inside. I get why the authorities want to take it down soon as it’s a hazard to buildings around it if the whole thing suddenly collapses but I hope they account for everyone.

I might be the only one here who cares about this but this situation is one that could happen to many buildings around the country.

It looks like there were several who knew the building was in danger of imminent collapse and repairs were underway. There were also several including city officials who signed off in the safety of the building.

..but according to NewsMax that was a building destroyed by drones in Russia..

Newsmax was way off in its coverage of a drone strike in Moscow ― by about 5,000 miles. On Tuesday, the far-right channel displayed images of the apartment collapse in Davenport, Iowa, as host Greta Van Susteren told of the “disturbing” attack in the Russian capital. (Watch the video below.)

One clue for viewers that something might be amiss was the English “Tow Away Zone” sign in one of the photos

Old parking garages always make me nervous. Especially when you can feel it shaking when a car drives by.

    Fun to skateboard around, though.

As an architect it’s my biggest concern. This is why I have clashed with clients over safety and code issues. Although in this case it sounds like some building officials OK’ed continued occupancy even with all of the warning signs.
