This makes me feel bad for Fetterman more than angry at the reporter.

I have a friend who has expressive aphasia from a catastrophic head injury. He cannot speak or write in real time. Fetterman's entire career will be like this unless they allow him to only use preprepared/scripts/questions, and even then, reading it perfectly ain't a 100% given either.

I don't, you vote for who you want into office. Knowing your state did this makes it a little bit sweeter.

    Nah **** that.

He's one of 50 people in charge of running a major house of the most powerful country in the world. And I'm supposed to think "awww you go boy!!"

This framing is worst than the "guy I can have a beer with test" for cons.

We always talk about 22nd Amendment and if Biden or Trump trotted out with that in prime time, I'd be wondering wtf is he saying or doing off camera.

    So no.

No ****ing kid gloves for Senators.

At least Feinstein picks and chooses her battles. She's definitely not the same person pre-covid. It's sad. I feel for her. But quit propping broken people to run our nation. That's a big reason the bad apples are still around.

I understand that sentiment given the pressure and expectation we put on folks at such high seats of power.

But Fetterman's case hits a bit different for me, since I personally know what he's suffering through.

I also know that if he was my Senator I wouldn't really give a **** if he could or could not speak in real time.

Does he believe what I believe and vote the way I want him to vote? If so, I'm satisfied.

His situation doesn't compare to Feinstein very well, IMO.

He's not holding back the wheels of government, and he could never have foreseen what happened to him.

And Fetterman didn't hide it. We all saw what was going on with him before he got elected, so I don't see any reason to throw a fit over it now.

Also, folks mocking or concern trolling Fetterman's "health"... you are basically on the same level as someone who would make fun of someone for being in a wheelchair. It's pretty gross behavior. But then again, most of the people I see doing it are of pretty low character, so not surprising.

I am sympathetic to his speech issues and hope he improves. I am on the fence about his handlers interpreting his comments for the press. But mix in a suit.

Yes Fetterman speaking is bad but this isn’t the Senate of the 19th C with Daniel Webster and John C Calhoun shaping things with oration.

Yesterday the senate confirmed the *FIRST* black women on the notorious racist 11th circuit with a history of Jim Crow. Nancy abudu has been a civil rights lawyer her entire life and was head of southern poverty center which fights for minorities. This is first time in history a civil rights lawyer will be on the 11th circuit

All the folks asking her to step down please do tell us your plan on nominating more Nancy abudus to the bench. Judges are the most important fabric of our society and are on the front lines of everything we do.

I have mixed feelings about it too. They can't just go around interpreting what he is saying after the fact forever. That's not doing anyone any favors. They need to recognize his limitations and either pivot around them or figure out/ask for some kind of accommodation.

I think I've found the answer:

I also understand your sentiment and I sympathize with his situation that are indeed different than ills plaguing our gerontocracy.

The partisan trenches have been dug so deep that we forgive so many apparent flaws. Fetterman is not the biggest offender of this but he might be the most visceral.

I just don't buy the rosy picture spinsters are using, and I will instinctively reject attempts to normalize this.

Outside the Ted Kennedy/RBG scorekeeping that sucks in anyone who gives a damn to pay attention, Feinstein is my senator and that I've come to like and respect over the years. She has unpopular stances like the national security wrt civil liberties but she also knows its successes that agencies can't publicize. Maybe a more radical senator is needed for California, but her stabilizing influence in the senate has been underrated.

I think she should step down, but I'm not calling for her to step down yet. It looks very bad, and I hope she can trust Newsom and her successor by doing the right thing at the most convenient time.

I agree, she has done some great things but it's time to call it a career. I feel so bad for her, she looks horrible and I am not sure she is "all there", I hope her "friends" are giving her good advice

As long as you know that her stepping down means NO MORE JUDGES. That means if clearance Thomas drops dead tomorrow we'll be unable to fill his seat. Just know what you're asking for before you ask her to step down

I'm sure Hollywood can gin up Tupac's holographic deep fake into Feinstein's likeness (Feinkenstein???) in case she drops dead tomorrow.

No easy answers but we've played the same game during rbg's last unexpected years

It's a damned if you do damned if you don't scenario, it seems.

The only way around the problem is if the Democrats passed a resolution to lower the bar on committee appointments from 60 votes to a simple majority. But that may not even be as straight forward as it sounds.
