Didn't read the rest of this verbose post, but please stop denigrating people who are on the spectrum, as Elon Musk is.

That Maher interview was painful. Desal is not absurdly cheap...yet. he gets a lot of leash for what he's promising, but the craving for our attention and adulation with his tweets are definitely crimping on a lot of that good will.

Rather have a megalomaniacal philanthrope than a megalomaniacal misanthrope.

    Lets be real here.

For a lot of people Free Speech just means being racist and misgendering trans people and even better if you can directly harass your targets.

This **** happens all the time. Basically, sites learn the hard way that people dont get on the internet to get harassed. "You can just block..." yeah sure but when you open up twitter and see nothing but "LOOK HOW VIOLENT THESE BLACK PEOPLE ARE!" and "TRANS ARE PEDOS!" then blocking people gets tiring. You instead just block the site.

So then all the people that find it more stressful to be there leave and all the the trolls get bored because there's no one left to troll. Just a circle jerk of hate that only the hardcore trolls can gain sustenance from and so the site dies.

So now Twitter is getting a new CEO who specializes in attracting advertisers and you can guess where this will go.

Elon will either have to get more strict about his hate speech policy or watch as twitter dwindles, especially with Bluesky around the corner. At this point a mediocre alternative will do Twitter in.

Musk gave in to Turkish government's censorship demand. Not surprising, but still disappointing. So much for free speech absolutism.

Instead Twitter 1.0 was silencing people who spoke out about Covid.

Because what's the one thing that's true in life:

    Nothing is free.

Everything appears free in isolation but zoom out and it costs you something.

I always felt there was much overlap between Twitter and LinkedIn.

great tweets bro - the descent into Kanye Valley continues

The worst part about this is it's just SO UNORIGINAL - I mean, I know when Musk tweets (rather than his social media team tweets) as they have a certain, sweaty muskiness about them.

The next line here is obviously, and always meant to be, "U TRIGGERED BRO"; but damn, "hey look at the big evil rich jew who controls everything" is not some smart play on 1984/Julius Goldstein, it's just the flat, soulless bleating of a total, complete dullard, not worthy of your time or attention, not the smartest guy in the room, not even interestingly bad in a rubbernecking kind of way.

The Twitter Files, Turkish Election Edition

Erdogan: Can you censor my opponents? I'll make it worth your while?
    Musk: Sure. NP.

    END OF FILES

Man if Musk bought LinkedIn and ruined it also - i cannot think of a better public service (too poor to afford it though)

They "silenced" people who posted "misinformation" in the context of a pandemic occurring, yes. However, Twitter 1.0 never claimed to be some free speech absolutist and publicly struggled moderating itself.

On the other hand, Musk claimed to be a free speech absolutist and was essentially "silencing" folks from the onset. It hasn't even been a year yet since Elon took over and he's already bent the knee to the Turkish govt.

Don't me daft. They silenced anything that wasn't part of the narrative...at the request of the government. Any lab leak talk was immediately banned. That isn't 'misinformation'
