Yeah man Im not too thrilled AR landed in our division. He's going to terrorize us for years to come. Imagine if Will Levis takes that chip and shoves it up the ass of everyone who passed him up? We have CJ and then Lawrence in JAX? Shaping up to be some great AFCS QB battles in the future. I hope we're on the right side of history!
This, all this. From a pure physical standpoint, we are last at young QB. From an accuracy standpoint, we might be first.
I hope all the rookie AFC South QBs are great. Imagine 10+ years of high-end, young QBs going to battle against each other every year? That would be so much fun, and make any successes matter all the more.
The difference was they didn’t still have a full draft the following year after acquiring Tunsil. The Anderson trade did not leave the Texans with an empty cupboard. They have a full draft and a tremendous amount of cap space even after extending Mason. The Texans are in great shape to continue the re-build and be relevant as early as next year (if not this year). They could still make trades and FA acquisitions to make the roster competitive this year, although unlikely.
LOL buddy I was red hot on CJ a few years back. Im starting to warm back up! I've just shifted my preference for the QB position, but Im hoping that they put CJ in a position to use his strengths. Kid can sling it.
True - but they also had a better team when they made the Tunsil trade so the draft picks have an entirely different context. Then, it limited their ability to get younger, cheaper; now, it (potentially) could prevent them from acquiring much-needed high-end prospects.
That’s a reasonable take. I think we just have a different viewpoint on building through the draft. The Texans chose quality over quantity and believe they got 2 franchise type players. If they are right, the draft was a success. Surely they are also going to get their starting center out of the draft. With a full draft next year and good management of cap space they can be in position to be good for quite a while. They are in a really good situation to use some of their cap room to provide quality veteran depth and to fill in holes with youngish guys if some of the drafted guys the last 2 years fail. I originally wanted the Texans to trade out of 2 to say Seattle, because I am higher on AR than Stroud, but we shall see. Who knows if anybody really wanted to trade up to our pick. I think Anderson was the perfect DE for what Demeco wants to do. We’ll see if he was right.
Right. And that, I think, is my primary issue. They didn't choose one over the other - they sacrificed potentially having both for one. They were going to add a top-9 non-QB prospect with 1.12. They likely would've been able to add a top-5-10 non-QB prospect next year, too. Those are "quality" picks. And 2.33 - which would've netted them a top 30 non-QB prospect - leans more "quality" than "quantity," IMO. If they were a.... 7-, 8-, 9-win team and moved up from the mid-/late-teens/20s to grab Anderson - with the idea they'd likely be there - or better next year... that's different. But staying at 12 presented a path of both quality and quantity this and next draft. It is - at least for me - a simple math equation: 1.2 + 1.12 + 2.33 + 1.'24 > 1.2 + 1.3 - and that's going to be true even if Stroud and Anderson are very good. This team is not ready for "less" - it still needs more.
If Stroud and Anderson end up being among the top at the 2 most expensive positions in football it would be worth it. The further down in the draft you go the odds go up that the person will not work out. If our first 4 picks are starters this year (which is definitely a possibility) we will have had an outstanding draft. You also act like the fact that we have a full draft next year even with the trades and tons of cap space doesn't factor into the equation. Getting back draft picks that were hurt last year also increase the odds that we have more depth than you think. I didn't like the Stingley pick, but hopefully he will pan out. It was a lot to pay no doubt, but the position worth if they both are perennial pro-bowlers will argue that they made the right decision. We can argue until the cow comes home but neither will know for a couple of years.
Would have missed out on AR and stroud then.. everyone loves to say what they would do with other picks, but you have no idea how it would work out. But I largely agree with you. It’s also interesting to note that a lot of the ppl who wish we didn’t make the trade are mad because we could have used the draft capital to move up for a QB.. which we wouldn’t do. And if we trade multiple firsts for a non qb then how is that different than what we just did? And a generational edge is arguably more important than any other non qb position.. sooo yay.
I think people are really overrating the cap space situation. Their offensive line is going to be one of the most expensive in the league next year and probably worse the year after. For all the cap space they "project" to have, it's important to remember that they have tons of players they'll have to sign. Just filling up the roster will eat that cap space up, like it has this year. It's awesome to project to have tons of capspace when you also have tons of rookies who project as starters, but that's not the case here. The Texans project to have capspace because they have a ton of veterans on 1 year deals that will need to be replaced, again, next offseason.
Inaccurate imo. He will have to clean up a lot. People make a really weird comparison in Jalen Hurts and I don't see it unless its because he is black? Jalen was much more polished as a passer coming out of school. Think there is high bust potential here.
I’m not overrating it. I think they will use it to re-sign the guys they think are worth it and add a few more. They will continue to build throught the draft and having the cap space allows them to extend guys like Rankin, Schultz if they pan out.
