    California governor declines to publicly back recommended reparations payments for Black residents

    https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/10/us/california-reparations-task-force-newsom-reaj/index.html

    excerpt:

    CNN — California’s governor has declined to publicly say whether he’d support reparations payments to some Black state residents recommended by a task force looking at how to mitigate injustices and discrimination stemming from slavery.

    The recommendations approved Saturday outline restitution that, if approved by state lawmakers, could cost billions of dollars to address historical disparities in health care, housing and policing.

    “Dealing with legacy is about much more than cash payments,” Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who is White, told CNN affiliate KCRA in a statement.

    “Many of the recommendations put forward by the Task Force are critical action items we’ve already been hard at work addressing: breaking down barriers to vote, bolstering resources to address hate, enacting sweeping law enforcement and justice reforms to build trust and safety, strengthening economic mobility – all while investing billions to root out disparities and improve equity in housing, education, healthcare, and well beyond,” Newsom said.

    While federal reparations efforts have stalled in Congress, pushes in California andsome US cities to atone for harms rooted in slavery – and address the racial wealth gap– have gained momentum since the 2020 police killing of George Floyd rekindled the Black Lives Matter movement.

    The California task force’s recommendations will be presented at its next meeting, then to the state Legislature by July 1. Among possible estimated values of recommended reparations for Black Californians are:

    • For health care disparities: $13,619 for each year of residency, based on 71-year life expectancy;

    • For housing discrimination: $148,099 or $3,366 for each year between 1933 and 1977 spent as a resident of the state;

    • For mass incarceration and overpolicing: $115,260 or $2,352 for each year of residency in California during the 49-year period between 1971 and 2020.

    The state’s Black population includes more than 2.5 million people.

    California joined the Union as a free state in 1850, with a state Constitution that expressly outlawed slavery.

    Somebody wants to run for president and, at least in this instance, is smart to not endorse an unpopular, self-defeating proposal.

    No it makes you a fascist.

    Hey man I would love it for once of you actually engaged in conversation about fascism. I always invite. I always explain my positions and you always go "lol no, to wrong" and leave.

    So it seems like you are either so offended you don't want to engage or you understand engaging would show your gaping hole in understanding these ideologies. Probably a combo of both.

    I also don't engage with the crazy drugged homeless guy who takes his pants off and takes a dump in front of the luxury hotel I stay at in San Francisco.

    Same level of sophistication offered by that guy as by you and your inane rants about "fascism".

    You engage with me. You are replying. You reply to tell me I'm wrong. That's engagement. Your comment here implies you should completely ignore me as I'm equivalent to a homeless man.

    But why are you engaging with every aspect of my comments expect conveniently when we actually delve into a modicum of nuance when it comes to defining these ideologies?

    No the reality is your last reply to me is a coping mechanism to feel superior for not engaging in any modicum of nuance.

    New York moves into the reparations derby

    https://hotair.com/jazz-shaw/2023/06/11/new-york-moves-into-the-reparations-derby-n557259

    excerpt:

    When it comes to progressive nonsense, two states appear to be engaged in a race to the bottom. Any time California does something crazy, New York has to launch into an effort to match them if not exceed them. (Or vice versa if New York goes first.) Previously, this applied to things like sanctuary status for illegal aliens, high taxes, and transgender ideology. But now, California has wrapped up its initial task force study of looking into paying reparations to Black residents. So obviously, New York is shifting into high gear and launching a similar effort.

    New York would create a commission to consider reparations to address the lingering, negative effects of slavery under a bill passed by the state Legislature on Thursday.

    “We want to make sure we are looking at slavery and its legacies,” said state Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages before the floor debate. “This is about beginning the process of healing our communities. There still is generational trauma that people are experiencing. This is just one step forward.”

    The state Assembly passed the bill about three hours after spirited debate on Thursday. The state Senate passed the measure hours later, and the bill will be sent to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul for consideration.

    Governor Hochul is pretty much guaranteed to sign the bill. How could she not and still keep her progressive bona fides intact? And at this point, there isn’t all that much risk for her. After all, this bill is only intended to set up “a commission that would examine the extent to which the federal and state government supported the institution of slavery.” That still leaves the state a long way from promising to write massive checks.

    Speaking of which, much like California, New York’s budget is currently in terrible shape. The California task force did not wind up suggesting specific reparation payments after Governor Gavin Newsom threw cold water all over the idea. Would Kathy Hochul demonstrate the same amount of sanity?
    interesting to think of Gavin "Mr. 28th Amendment" Newsom as having sanity. :cool:
