"Poison pill" is more appropriately used in reference to guys who have been extended but whose extension hasn't yet kicked in, in reference to the difficulties in trading that player because of dual salary-matching rules. Think KPJ this past season. I think what you're referring to is more along the lines of what the Rockets did with Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik, two ARENAS RULE free agents. There, the Rockets structured the offer sheets to be low numbers in Years 1 and 2, then balloon to (near) the max salary in Years 3 and 4. The only major free agent that would even be possible with is Austin Reaves. Even then, I doubt the Lakers fail to match any remotely reasonable offer sheet. For a guy like Cam Johnson, all you can really do is front-load the contract as much as possible, then have it decline 5% (the max decline allowed) each year thereafter.
Because Josh Christopher is a superior all around basketball player and the future GOAT. After about his 8th straight MVP trophy you guys are all going to be like "You know, Williamson may have been onto something."
So Bima, sounds like u don’t think we have much of a chance at signing Cam Johnson away from the Nets, even though they don’t have much cap flexibility? I’d like to be realistic because an offer sheet waiting period could undermine the pursuit of other free agent targets.
Yeah, it’ll be tough to put together an offer sheet that both (A) Brooklyn won’t match and (B) won’t end up being a bad contract. But I still think the Rockets should NEGOTIATE with Cam to drive up his price and further hamstring Brooklyn going forward.
I remember your first post on Clutchfans about Christopher 2 days before Josh's 1st birthday. Those were the days...
I really like Cam Johnson but I am just seeing a scenario where it further is the defensive imbalance on our team if he is starting at small forward. Cam/Draft #3 scenario…. Taking Amen. Trade #19+Jalen+Tate+Christopher+Garuba for Bridges and Claxton. Sign Harden for 3 years 108 million. Sign Cam 4 years 100 million. Claxton/Sengun Smith/KMJ Cam/Eason Bridges/KPJ Harden/Amen/Ty
No is the short answer. The Arenas provision explained in the below quote: Hoops Rumors Glossary: Gilbert Arenas Provision | Hoops Rumors Next year will be Johnson's 5th year. Brooklyn has full bird rights, the issue with matching an offer for him is the luxury tax bill it will most certainly come attached to, not the mechanism with which they match.
The tax bill for both players - Johnson and the Nets, Reaves and the Lakers, could be quite high. Brooklyn could be in the 250% tax bracket matching an $18-$20m deal and that's doing nothing else to improve the current situation. Would they pay the tax to keep Johnson on a team that has little hope of playing in the post season? The Lakers are in a real tough spot with Reaves, Russell & Hachimura all being due. They can keep them all but it would be incredibly costly, upwards of the 650% tax bracket, that's with Russell getting a lower deal than his current one, and still have roster work to do. While the Lakers have spent into the tax in the past, they are limited financially compared to the big spending teams - do they pay that tax?? If the Lakers don't keep all three, who do they prioritize ?? EDIT: That doesn't take into account the possible 2nd apron issues.
You guys must be smoking that good Zaza if you think harden coming back would be a good idea. Also, we ain’t getting wemby. Hopefully we can get scoot but I don’t even see that happening . 3-6th pick for us. Toronto , clippers, hawks seem like good trade partners
This video came out; if this is all it takes to get it done, I'm for it Trade 1) Kenyon / Tate / first round picks and pick swaps x Mikal Bridges _____________________ Free Agency 1) sign Harden to $38/yr or less on a descending contract. UFA after Opting out of Player Option 2 ) sign Torrey Craig (UFA) to 1 year deal. ______________________ Draft @ #1) Wembanyama @ #2) Brandon Miller @ #3) Jarace Walker (my version of Draymond slash Robert Williams) @ #4) Cam Whitmore ( Bigger Marcus Smart version ) @ #5) Amen Thompson ( can score, pass......needs an outside jumper ) @#6) Scoot ( can score.......needs an outside jumper ) 2 or 3 years from KPj level @ #20) Dereck Lively or move back to the second round for Zach Edey (pay 2nd rounders less money) _________________________ Roster 1) Harden..................(KPj) TyTy Scoot 2) Green....................(KPj & Harden) 3) Mikal Bridges........Brandon Miller Torrey Craig (KPj & Harden & Jabari) Amen T, 4) Jabari....................Tari Eason (Jabari & Torrey Craig) Jarace Walker, Cam Whitmore 5) Sengun..................Garuba, Dereck Lively, or Zach Edey Wembanyama
LOL. Five first round picks and KJ Martin and Tate for just Bridges? Does that writer think Mikal is Giannis or something? Holy crap, that is some grade-A stupidity right there.
man... that trade for OG Anunoby would essentially be a trade of Harden from 3 seasons ago, PJ Tucker from 2 seasons ago, and Eric Gordon from this year for a guy that just averaged 16 points per game in a league that has seen an explosion of scoring. Not very good value sir.
Instead of a trade like that I would just trade the picks if i could as they come. Next year that could be the 6-12th pick or so. Trade that with a young player or two already gets you a player like OG A. The year after that you could try again with a top 15th pick and a player or two etc
I didn't make the video but the cost of players is high with the new CBA deal. Bulls wanted 2 first round picks for Caruso at the trade deadline. Dude was a backup scoring 5 points per game. Nets turned down 4 first round picks from Memphis for Mikal Bridges at the deadline. We would be giving them their own picks back
I thought I just saw on here today that teams may be unloading salary this offseason. At least some teams which could lower the value of players as a whole. A lot of people have said that the Gobert trade inflated the values of players in trades. Maybe it could have if the trade went well and was not a catastrophic failure. At this point it may help to drive down picks for players lol
Yes, the new CBA has cap smoothing this time and adds a second apron..... But it still has the old fashion supply and demand business Goal. If you've seen the free agent market list......it's very thin of top talent. In my personal opinion, those under age 28 will be highly sought out and those over 30 (Conley, Kyrie, etc) will bite the bullet.
Assuming we aren't in a position to get Scoot: Trade for Dejounte Murray and pay the man to lock up a pretty good two way guard in their prime. Cam Johnson $26m Jakob Poeltl $18m Murray / Tyty Green / KMJ Johnson / Amen/Eason Jabari / Eason/Sengun Poeltl / Sengun / Jabari
