To add the US isn’t alone in people acting badly in public transit. I’ve seen perverts on subways in Asia. In Japan it’s almost accepted. In Singapore they have public campaigns against offending public sensitivities in public transit.

In Dublin I saw a drunk assault an LEO on the LRT. This was at 10 AM. I did actually consider intervening and helping the LEO but figured as a visitor best to leave it to the authorities.

That’s not the case in much of the World.

I think you need to sit down with a professional, the word that should keep ringing in your ears is “projection”. I can’t fathom being so obsessed with someone while dealing with whatever it is you are. If you read the whole exchange you’d have your answer but you don’t actually read once you get emotionally charged and offended

I suggest reading into words like “violent” that are perhaps too complex for you.

god bless, I’m here if you need me. Ask a stranger for a hug

2 messages down, that’s then span of your screen or more yet your comprehension ..

My interest in this is primarily because of the technique used and questions of self defense that I deal with in martial arts. This whole situation is emblematic of a lot of problems in the US.

I’ve seen plenty of homeless mentally ill people ranting and acting out in public in many places in the US including Texas. This is a national problem and reducing it to “Blue” vs “Red” isn’t going to address it. At the same time dealing with this as purely an issue of either law enforcement or as social services isn’t going to solve it. While yes most homeless are not violent and more likely to be victims of crime doesn’t mean that there isn’t a threat from them. Over the last few years there have been many attacks on elderly Asians and in NYC there have been attacks including pushing people onto subway tracks by mentally ill homeless. All of these lead to more concern and make things dangerous for everyone including the homeless when LEO don’t seem to be able to address these situations. That leads to more civilians feeling they need to act.

At the same time we can’t arrest or use police power out of the problem. I’ve seen even here in Minnesota where a homeless encampment is evicted only to crop up somewhere else. Our jails aren’t equipped to handle these and nor should they be holding peaceful people who just happen to be homeless and or mentally ill.

To solve homelessness we need a solution across the board that can provide for housing, treatment and at the same time safety and security.

Are other countries with strong individualistic cultures not as violent as the US? I'm thinking of Australia, Germany, and many Western EU countries. All of these countries have stronger safety nets and much better access to mental health, which I think plays a big role.

Aside from individualism (and I wouldn't put Germany on a list of individualistic societies), I think the key difference here is the glorification of violence in the US.

15 minutes in a rare naked choke, the guy is kind of insane. I feel like the popularization of UFC, BJJ etc. people are more aware of these moves and it might not be a good thing unless you are actually trained.

From all witness accounts, Neely was saying more than words. His words were threatening to other passengers. Now, they don't know his history of 42 arrests, but now that we see his history of assault, I'm leaning more on the witnesses's sides that Neely was a potential threat.

Neely didn't deserve to die, but the citizens had to take their safety into their own hands as the city again fails to prevent these situations. Remember, police will not help you even if they are there.

I don't think the chokeholder should be charged.

I don't agree with her intersectional points, but Roxanne Gay's column today boils this down to a simple, awful point: we hate each other and would rather commit acts of violence than give each other even the smallest amount of social grace.

We live in a country where we have 25 percent of the world's prison population while having 4 percent of the world's overall population and still have clowns claiming police don't arrest enough people.

    We are a psychopathic nation.

I lived in Queens for 2 years. Walked alone at night so many times. Have walked by ranting homeless people many times. Never once did I feel like "the police need to go around and crack more skulls".

Our society is so ****ed up.

He's a former Marine. I don't know if he's a grunt or not but from my experience I remember seeing entire squads hover around a computer(all white) in one of the barracks rooms during down time and watching World Star Hip Hop videos of fights and "thuggery" because these people loved making fun of urban poor black culture.

I wouldn't be surprised if this dude had a lot of racist sentiments also.

The exchange seemed like you being entitled to people agreeing with your shitty takes and being angry and calling people you disagree with as "violent".

You are weird especially if you aren't playing a character. Like you might make a perfect case study of how social media algorithms effect critical thinking skills.

I believe it can be. I think it called "terroristic threat" in TX. I am not referencing this situation as more details are needed.
It depends. If I am sitting in an airplane or on a bus and someone is standing over me while yelling and acting nuts, I would feel threatened, weapon or not.

And you should be charged with murder if you proceed to hold that person in a choke hold for 15 minutes leading to their death.

And people wonder why the term "fascist" is used more often. Look at how so many of our conservative posters here are giddy about a 15 minute chokehold of a homeless guy

And like every instance similar to this you have psychopathic people be like "but what if he was standing in an ULTRA threatening manner, doesn't have justify death?"
