Matt Gage getting the callup. We won't call up Whitley because his stats aren't worthy, so let's call up the 30 y/o with the 5.00 ERA and 1.89 WHIP who played international league ball last year. Brilliant!
I imagine they called up the guy they thought they might use as a reliever and will make a decision on who gets called up to replace Garcia closer to when they would need that person. Gage may not even pitch during his time on the team depending on how games go.
Honestly, I think they just don't want to start the arb clock on some of these guys. All over the league I see teams call up trash (Bannon anyone) just to fill roster spots due to injuries. Rarely are top level prospects brought up as injury replacements. Edit: Or it could be they're not on the 40 man roster. I assume you can add guys to that roster for injury replacements. I'm not sure how that works exactly.
Anyone can be added to the 40 man as long as there is an opening. Once added a player can not be removed, except by going on 60 day IL, without trading or waiving him. A player on 60 day IL does not count against the 40 but someone on 10 day / 15 day IL does Therefore putting someone on the 10/15 day IL does not open a spot on the 40 man so injury replacements can only come from there Once on 40 man roster a new level of service time is triggered
Agree with everything, but that last sentence. Dusty has a lefty in the pen. The Giants are deploying ~6 LHBs today. Odds are much better that Diaz catches two consecutive games than Gage not getting into a game today or tomorrow.

True, I wish Crane hadn't given in to the pressure. Do you think Manfred said, you not only have to fire Luhnow/Hinch, but also you cant promote your next GM/Manager from within the org? If so Manfred is trying to change the way MLB operate. What do you think his real problem was with the way the Stros were being run? I dont think this had much to do with cheating. I think it had to do with the way Luhnow and staff were always one step ahead of the rest of MLB when it came to scouting (See: Alvarez/Marwin as examples and the way they scouted the DR/Venezuela/PR etc...) They were so far ahead of MLB it was going to take the rest of MLB 5 yrs to catch up and they were doing this with less boots on the ground and that upset a lot of traditional baseball folks. This doesn't even bring in the analytics stuff like RPM on pitches and changing launch angles on prospects swings. Yep, I can see why a Yankee fan like Manfred would be worried that the Stros would become the new Yankees dynasty type team. In some respects they still are this era's premier dynasty despite Manfred doing everything in his power to destroy what Luhnow built. Sad thing for MLB is Crane has now hired Brown who I think is going to be a great GM in his own right, because of his great scouting background. Hopefully he keeps most of Luhnow's processes in place and puts his own touch on the scouting dept. BTW, how many FO guys are remaining from the Luhnow regime?
It is truly amazing how bad that organization is and how poorly run it is. I have zero doubt I could take over tomorrow and hire 15 people from here and a couple other websites and do better than their actual people who run that organization. It’s dreadful and they should be ashamed. Seriously.
Nah I was kidding, main reason I can't get into audio books or podcasts is I read faster and my mind doesn't wander.
Start Bielak and bring up France or Whitley and see what they can do. I wouldn't be against Blanco getting a shot. If this doesn't workout them make a minor trade for a vet like Kluber or Odorizzi type to help fill the void. I'm thinking Urquidy/LMJ will be back some time in the next couple of months. We've been spoiled by all of this great pitching and the fact that they've stayed mostly healthy. This is how the other half lives.
