The other thing being missed here is that Abreu was already your answer to replace Montero in the pen as 8th inning/setup man and backup closer. So there was absolutely no need to give Montero the advantage in negotiations (11.5 million says he had us over a barrel). I just think it was an unforced error. I hope Montero proves me wrong in these next 3 seasons. That high WHIP is just glaring at this point. Wait until the third out doesn't get recorded with 2 men on and instead the ball leaves the yard. That era gonna shoot well past 5 and in quick order.
Dubon's numbers where slightly better than they are now his first 2 seasons with the Giants and he only saw the field in 1 of every 3 games. Looks like he didn't bond much with the clubhouse since he only stays in touch with 2 former players.
I don't buy Dubon being a good player long term, or a starter in the outfield if we're healthy, however he's been absurdly valuable this first month. With Abreu and Hensley completely wetting the bed and Bregman off to another slow start our offense would have been in deep s**t if he hadn't stepped up. As for the pitching, there's only so much depth you can reasonably plan for in the offseason. 3/6 of your starters being hurt at the same time isn't something you can absorb and still have 5 proven starters. No team keeps 3 spare quality starters in the pen heading into a season. With the way the schedule breaks down, we only need our 5th starter once from now until mid May. Depending on the severity of Garcia and Urquidy we may have to hit the market.
Sometimes I am reminded of the early days when we were just hoping for a 500 season at some point. And every time we would think the dome may be too big, we'd look up at the top ring and see the rooster and the toy cannon to let us know it was OK.
LMJ is supposed to be back this month. Before you make a trade I think France and Whitley need to be given the ball to see what happens there. It’s possible one of them is pretty good and then we still have 5 guys. If one of them is even average and LMJ is back we are ahead of the world with 3 aces, an above average guy and someone average. but yeah- if either or both of them are down for a long time no reason to be ****ing around with Bielak (he’s a spot starter one or two games type to me) need to bring up the actual prospects and tell them sink or swim so we can know what we need to do in the trade market. Also- Madbum is doing nothing. PPS- I. Sure Bauer has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave the island of anyone in MLB comes calling.
He wasn’t the one I was calling an ace. our 3 aces are Framber, Javier and Brown. LMJ is our “above average” guy.
Do you give Whitley the ball even w/ his struggles in AAA this year? Genuinely curious. I'd give him a shot. Is France supposed to be a better prospect than Whitley? I've heard of France , a little buzz about him, but not sure where he ranks on like if he's a long-term option for the team or just a stop gap starter.
Yes. I give Whitley the ball. It’s possible that his defense has let him down a little- the guys coming in behind him allow every runner to score, and he’s been a little unlucky with HR’s. Also/ that’s a very tough run environment. It would not shock me if he put up a 4.5 era which would be average. France has been better than Whitley in AAA performance wise. He’s not considered as promising a prospect.
He live in Sacramento for 2 years in highschool so no the Giants aren't his hometown team. He his life in Honduras before that. He drafted by Milwaukee and spent his minor league career around there.
