Legitimately made this my username to poke fun at Dirk Nowitzski. True story, but I'd love to start discussing who DERPs the most! Added Jaylen Brown. His DERP would indicate a guy who is the perfect 2nd fiddle. Sure, he'd be the best player here but idk why Boston would trade him for developing youth. Beyond that, even if they did is he a guy who can take another step forward? Become a top 10 player in the league?
Boban is our best player!!! most of the chart matches the eye test IMO. Nix looked bad and these numbers support that in spades.
lol yeah but he was a floppyboi. chart sorted! Nix really was the doodoobutts. I don't see how he makes the team next season. By gawd they better hire a veteran point guard no matter what happens. Unless Tyty is worse (somehow) or injured there's no justification for Nix. We cracked a few jokes on the guy but it got sad after like 2 months. I mean you basically can't overstate how bad he was. The guy just doesn't have it, it's not his fault coach Goofy let him get murdered like that. I wish him the best, but I think that includes not embarrassing the young dude. I hope he goes overseas and dominates, comes back to the NBA later taking the PJ Tucker route. I think this exercise also kind of checked my admiration for Christopher and Washington too.
FYI, there's already a stat called Player Impact Estimation (PIE) that does something similar to this. It tries to assign a value based upon the player's contribution as a ratio to the overall team stats, though. Also, the multiplication of every stat by the average NBA PPP seems odd on the surface. It seems like you're just multiplying everything by an arbitrary number that's an average for the entire league instead of factoring in each player's pace (for example) while in the game. Like an assist is 1.18 * a bucket or a rebound is 1.18 * a bucket, etc. seems kind of off. BTW, if you want to calculate possessions, there are estimations/equations that get you close to it, or you could get them from NBA.com where I think it's not an estimation, but more of a "real number". I don't know, maybe I'm wrong. Nice effort, though!
Interesting, I'll look that up. The assist one is definitely wonky but I didn't feel like I could just leave it out. Maybe should be x(points per assist) if there is such a stat. I think the best feature of this exercise is that it evens out blocks, steals and rebounds with scoring. It's not really random either...logically, obtaining a possession would = average points per possession. It's definitely not perfect! Although I did get the MVP right (DERP per game)
