If the ancient Egyptians were black, Netflix, in a convoluted sort of way, is further concealing that history by making Cleopatra black in the name of diversity or inclusion or whatever.

Anyway, I thought the ancient Egyptians being black was an accepted possibility. o_O

    Cleopatra wasn’t black.

Cleopatra wasn’t Egyptian- she was Macedonian, similar to Greek.

    Jesus wasn’t black either.

I am not sure why we care whether people that lived 2000 years ago are black or white or brown. However if someone is going to do an historic documentary series, it should be accurate.

If they want to do a movie that is fictional, then people can be whatever.

What if we wake up one day to find out that history was whitewashed? Think Charlton Heston on Planet of the Apes.

I didn't research this, so I can't talk about the particulars, but there are people who claim that history has been whitewashed. The claim is that white people have not always been in power. Prior to the Black Plague, which wiped out black people, hence the name, black people ruled all over the world. That's a really quick and dirty summary.

In this viewpoint, the reason Cleopatra would have been black is that white Macedonians went to Egypt and adopted and intermarried with black Egyptians. I'll go down that rabbit hole again this summer to share primary sources ( @Ancient Moabite might be able to help you here or might go way beyond ), but the idea that Cleopatra was at least part black is within that viewpoint. Modern Egyptians, like the one suing Netflix, are part of the mixture, too.

The more interesting point is the one you bring up wondering why people care what color people were 2,000 years ago. What you don't see is that you care because you identify with your own history from 2,000 years ago. It's important to you. You are not alone in that. Not at all.

Religion and history are not all that different. If religion is used as a means to control people, then history is also used as a means to control people.

If you tell white people that they have always ruled the world and they see that they currently rule the world, they're going to feel some type of way about themselves. You tell the opposite to black people and they're going to feel a type of way about themselves. They will also view each other through that lens, as well.

Planet of the Apes reveals the deep fear that white people have of black people ruling over them. That's a normal viewpoint. Now, what if that fear is based on a memory buried in their subconscious of a time when black people ruled over them? What if the people who made that movie know about that history? That's why I see the possibility of Netflix participating in the cover up by making Cleopatra black for diversity or whatever.

I haven’t seen the show or know much about but on what basis is Netflix doing this to cover up Cleopatra for diversity? Just writing that it seem pretty tortured logic.

As noted yes Cleopatra might very well have had black skin and under our current definitions of race been black. She was descended from the Ptolemy’s who were Greek but given that there was much intermarriage the hundreds of years that separate her from Alexander that Greek ethnic background could be changed. Also from ancient Egyptian art many of the people of that time are show with very dark skin. Even now in modern Egypt there are many Egyptians with a range of skin tones from light to dark.

What I am saying is convoluted, as I warned, but it goes like this... There is a belief that history was whitewashed... in that viewpoint, people believe that there are people today who know what the real history is, that black people once ruled the world before white people took over... those people, in an effort to conceal that history, would portray Cleopatra as black under the guise of diversity or inclusion or whatever, but not to portray history as it really was. In that way, the fake history that we are taught is further cemented in our minds.

Agreed. The real ancient Egyptians, prior to the Ptolemies, were very dark and very tall. Think of the Bols, for example.

100%, Egyptians have a right to be upset the same way a MLK documentary with him being white would upset people.

this is a severe case of the woke virus, it’s just dumb and pointless

Naw, Cleopatra was more Curry than Bol Bol. She would be considered black today like Curry. Bol Bol would fit right into Egypt prior to the Ptolomies arriving and mixing in with those Egyptians. Bol Bol has his own nation/tribe. Not sure if it is one that came from the Egyptians or not or where that tribe is today.

The ancient royal Egyptians like a lot of other royals intermarried/participated in incest. Through dating, dental, facial structure and soft tissue preserved on the mummies we have a very good idea about what they looked like.

circumventing that (the Egyptians know their culture and history) with thsi is pretty insulting. They have a right to be upset

What are you claiming here? That Cleopatra looked like that Egyptian lawyer? That she was white like the Macedonians?

It's no surprise that the Egyptians would be offended because they grow up believing they are direct descendants of the ancient Egyptians. They have identified with that version of history. It's a source of pride for them and they are completely invested. I'm presenting an opposing viewpoint that states that ancient Egyptians, along with many other civilizations and people of that time, were black. They were more Bol Bol than Mohamed Salah.
