Honestly him being quiet these last 3 years and putting 70m into a new facility.......I think he started out rough but has come around ....... DD
Green, Sengun, Jabari and possibly Wemby alongside tons of more picks and one of the top coaches in the league just in time before The Rockets start making some potential major acquisitions. He hasn't been horrific, he has been excellent. He stuck to the plan no matter what people said. What was horrific? That they lost? How you think our young stars got here? How you think The Rockets have a shot at possibly the most hyped rookie ever? Or wait, he was horrific because Harden left? Harden left because he couldn't get it done when it mattered. He has yet to prove otherwise, Houston didn't lose anything with Harden walking. MDA? MOREY? Gimmick coach and overrated GM who also hasn't done $hit....So what was horrific?
Thats just rewriting the narrative. Harden and Cp3 already had bad blood and also Cp3 being the choke god even if they ran it bsck nothing would have happened. I really hate how people pretend Rox had something good and Tillman somehow ruined it lol the Rox window was closed regardless. They couldnt beat GSW without KD, Iggy and Cousins, Curry had a dislocated finger I mean what else needed to be said? The stars aligned and even then they couldnt get it done. The Rox window was closed. Fertita didnt pay the lux tax for Trevor Ariza who has done nothing since he left the team, you act like we let Jalen Brunson go or something.
Tilman seems like a miserable personality to have as your owner and to hear talk in press conferences, but give credit where it’s due over the last 3 seasons. 1. Letting the team go full tank for 3 whole seasons without getting impatient. Many owners would have forced the GM to get on the mediocrity treadmill. 2. Paying $88M in dead money / buyouts this season, which has to be an all time record. 3. Little things like the Garrison Matthews /Bruno Fernando Hawks trade where we essentially volunteered to pay $4M to buy 2 future second round picks. That’s the opposite of cheap. 4. The practice facility (assuming it gets built). Leslie Alexander refused to build one. 5. Paying up for Ime as a top bracket coach. You can’t really ask for more than that. Ownership is setting the team up as well as could be asked right now.
I don't mind him becoming more quiet. Hopefully it was not just Silas and now with the new exciting Ime Udoka he is not going to getting back to his pompous self again.
There you are not totally right. Don't worry, professionals got that mapped out. If you want a perennial contender you have to consider spending over the tax. It is just what serious contenders do. If you just want to contend for 4-6th seeds every year of course the costs are substantially lower. With 7-10th seed even lower costs. Then you got to be smart. But if you suck like the Wolves with 3 (2 and half bc Gobert is technically not a star) stars and still are a 8th seed, then the costs are high and results are average. (Fit and inconsistent defense) The only thing Antman is still on a cheaper contract.
Meh. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while. When asked about ticketholders who don't agree with hiring Udoka, his answer was that they are bad Christians for not giving Udoka a second chance. What in the holy F was that? Someone asking you a professional question. In an hour long press conference he said the top 3 most awkward things and he had everything written down. He still doesn't know what he's doing. He just chose the tough and macho guy, that's always been his simpleton mindset. It just so happens that this time the toughest guy was one of the most talented coaches on the market. It was good fortune for us more than anything. This guy messed up a contender because he thought he was masterful at pinching pennies while in a title window. He's the reason we replaced Trevor Ariza with Tyler Ennis. He's the reason we replaced CP3 with rugged Westbrook. He's the reason James Harden, Daryl Morey and MDA all lied to escape the franchise. Now we're learning, he's maybe the reason KPJ was treated like Lebron James these last two seasons. His son - who had no front office experience - is quietly influencing key decisions in the front office - which is typically done under a veil so that you take credit when things go well and blame everyone else when things go wrong. Rafael Stone is "managing" Tilman better than Morey did. If you want to give anyone props, give it to this rookie GM who is finessing this fast food billionaire. If Stone is doing nothing else better than Morey, this alone would be worth having him.
Disagree. I felt the same way as it was happening in real time so not sure how I'm re-writing any narrative. I'm open to the idea that I'm wrong, but you didn't convince me of it.
You aren’t wrong. Tilman bootlickers are as stupid as he is. That’s why they think similarly and have the same exact tunnel vision.
LMFAO Lose a bunch of games and hire a coach. Wow, what brilliant ownership choices, clearly we were wrong about him. He still has yet to do one thing to put the franchise in a better place than he found it. I like the hire, and to a degree I like the direction. But he hasn't accomplished s**t to make up for destroying the title contender he inherited.
I think most of you like to hate on things you don't know and love something you know and are comfortable with. I remember Les not paying up to strengthen several contender candidate teams. Yao and McGrady were run to the ground because they couldn't bring any help until they both broke down. Then Harden ran BS teams for several years except for CP year. Not like Hakeem had a super team, either....
I’m still waiting for a point guard. We should never have dealt away CP3, in my opinion, and ever since then we’ve had a hole in that position you could drive a truck through. Getting Westbrook wasted more of Harden’s prime. The BS about Harden and CP3 is nothing I never bought into. They are both professionals. Chris Paul was stunned that he was traded. He’s said so. Westbrook was purely a Tilman deal, in my opinion. I think getting Udoka was an amazing move. When I finally see our “new practice facility” I’m sure I’ll say the same thing. Yet I am far from “eating crow.” I’m waiting to see how things play out. Udoka isn’t a magician. I want to see the coach get supported with moves by our GM. I want to see the results of the draft, the moves made this summer related and unrelated to the draft. The team Coach Udoka ultimately has to battle with this season. I want to see what Tilman does to support his coach and his general manager. Fertitta talks a lot, but you can’t even buy a Coke with talk. He’s made a great move hiring a first rate coach. I’ll be watching to see how everything else plays out with interest. The feathers can wait.
We don't have to eat crow yet. Udoka is a wonderful hire. The measurement of success for Tilly is the game results themselves. Let's roll.
Tilman is a trashy guy. He doesn’t know much about basketball. You know what -- most owners are some version of the same. Cuban, Ballmer, Dolan, Dan Gilbert, Lacob, the Buss family, Joe Tsai, ARod etc. There’s very few owners that aren’t somewhat cringy or embarrassing. If they aren’t, it’s because they’re anonymous finance guys. Personally I’ve accepted that. I also think Tilman wasn’t great in the Harden era, but the Westbrook / CP3 trade was Harden’s demand and Morey’s execution. You’re kidding yourself if you think Tilman is the #1 villain there. His franchise player demanded a trade and he told his GM to get it done. Most owners would do the same. Not signing Ariza had no impact - Ariza was absolutely cooked. Is Tilman a great owner? Absolutely No. Is he the reason we’ve had to rebuild the last 3 years? Also no. Is he doing everything he needs to do over the last 3 years for this team to be good again, in a way that has surprised me, and is above average for owners in this league? Yes
Lol, giving him credit for "paying $88m dead money"? The contracts are guaranteed - it's not like he can try to pull an Elon Musk and not pay them. If he decided not to pay contracts, he'd probably be Sterling or Sarvered out of the league. And it's not like owning an NBA team by itself doesn't make that a financial trifle. Also, you know maybe he also bears the blame for acquiring $88m in dead money/buyouts of players that were brought in by him?
What are you even talking about? Contracts are guaranteed. Paying John Wall $46M to play for another team is a very good thing for this team, and something a lot of owners would balk at doing. Trading Matthews and Fernando for Justin Holiday and a second then buying him out is straight up paying $4M in dead money for 2 second round picks. Trading for Derrick Favors and a second than buying him out is straight up paying $2M in dead money for a second round pick. Being willing to pay massive amounts of dead money so your team can better tank while you accumulate minor assets on the margin is good. Many owners would refuse when their GM asks them. And I don’t like Tilman, I think he’s a scummy person, but these are the facts of the last 3 seasons. Tilman doesn’t make the trades. Tilman’s job is to open his wallet, and for the last 3 seasons he has. If the practice facility is real, that’s even more true.
