If we did a deal with the Pats, it’d be more interesting if they sent a defender instead of Mac wouldn’t it?

I’d be much happier if we essentially got some elite defender to move back to 14 to pick up that 2024 first and yet remain high enough at 12 & 14 to still make waves like JSN & Bijan/Kincaid + whatever vet defender they’d send. Judson is older, but getting a pro bowl DE plus more equitable compensation might do it.

tl;dr: Texans are OUT on Stroud, Levis & Richardson, IN on Hooker, questionable on Anderson, maybe IN on Wilson

Here are the most likely scenarios for the Texans and where things currently stand heading into the draft, according to multiple NFL sources:

With Young unavailable to acquire, the Texans may indeed pass on a quarterback with their second overall pick.

The Texans have evaluated and considered Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud for months, including hosting him for a visit at NRG Stadium, interviewing him at the NFL scouting combine and scouting his campus Pro Day workout. Stroud excelled for the Buckeyes, but he isn’t the Texans’ first choice at quarterback as he ranked behind Young on their draft board and other NFL teams seeking a quarterback.

Multiple sources anticipate the Texans opting to go with a defensive end instead of Stroud with those opinions echoed throughout the past month and this week.

One league source notered Wednesday night that the Texans have conducted significant due diligence in recent days and weeks about Stroud and have debated the merits of potentially drafting him. They have also discussed, should they not pick Stroud, how they might obtain a quarterback in the draft or via a trade given the wide gamut of opinions on Stroud, a tall, strong-armed pocket passer who showed some ability to go off-script during an impressive performance against Georgia’s elite defense.

If the Texans were to draft Stroud, sources emphasized, it would be considered a major surprise at this point and a departure from the direction they’ve been headed in during the latter stages of the draft process. Not drafting Stroud is not expected to have anything to do with him being represented by David Mulugheta, former Texans Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson’s Austin-based agent. It would simply be a football decision based on Stroud’s ability to process on the fly, read defenses and run the Kyle Shanahan-Gary Kubiak offense being installed by offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik.

Where will Stroud wind up if the Texans don’t pick him? The Tennessee Titans are exploring a potential trade up to the Arizona Cardinals’ third overall selection with Stroud their target, according to league sources.

Contrary to speculation, including an unfounded Reddit rumor, the Texans are not expected to draft Kentucky quarterback Will Levis at No. 2 or No. 12, per sources. And the Texans didn’t conduct a visit or private workout with Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson and are not expected to draft him, per sources.

The Texans do have a high opinion of Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker, per sources. Hooker visited them directly after the NFL scouring combine, and might not be available for their 33rd overall pick in the second round. Hooker is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is expected to be able to practice in some capacity by August and play at some point this season. The highest spot for Hooker might go in the first round, per sources, would be the Minnesota Vikings’ No. 23 overall pick.

Although the Texans have a strong comfort zone with Anderson, who visited them, the Seattle Seahawks and Detroit Lions, from a football and character standpoint, there are legitimate questions about whether his ceiling is high enough to justify the pick.

The two-time consensus All-American and Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year is regarded as more of a pure fit as a stand-up 3-4 outside linebacker rather than a classic 4-3 defensive end who plays with his hand in the dirt.

Those factors are why the Texans have contemplated drafting Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson.

Another Texans article where the writer can't commit to anything because he doesn't know. Getting boring at this point.

If I had to bet this would be my guess. I’m assuming a trade down from 12 for HH. Get those two, C and TE in the first three rounds and we should be in good shape.

It's funny because no one seems to know what they're gonna do, yet I think we can feel more certain about the picks this year than we could last year. I think we need to prepare ourselves for Will Anderson and Hendon Hooker. The question is, at 2 and what pick?

This is super disappointing as a fan that spent the whole season looking forward to the draft. For two glaring reasons:

    1. With Hooker, you won't know what you have until at least 2 years from now. To me, that signals that they're not playing for next year, which is the only excuse of not taking a guy early.

    2. I quite honestly think Hooker compares to Davis Mills quite favorably. Does he do anything better, even? He's hard to even scout to know. He's also a year older than Mills.

If Caserio picks Hooker in the first, he should be fired immediately.

    What a disaster. Prepare yourselves.

I hope I'm wrong, and I will take whatever roasting you want to give me if I am.

No I think you are right unfortunately.. I’m not saying it won’t work out it’s just very underwhelming. Everyone else in our division are going for it.. we in most cases go the safe right.. seem to be a common theme under Caserio.

Thank the LORD draft day is here, I am so sick of seeing mock drafts, at this point just make the picks so we can start dealing in reality.

Daniel Jeremiah has the Texans moving up to 3 from 12 to take either Anderson at 2 and Stroud at 3 or vice versa. Josh Norris has confirmed this from another source. How is that playing it safe? Not saying it will happen because maybe we have to give up too much but it appears they’re trying.

I’m genuinely curious why you feel we aren’t?

Lol I’m not a CJ fan but Cardelle had 1500 passing yards in his peak season.

less than any of the top 4 QBs this year, not even comparable except for their school.

Really referencing their mutual disdain for school not their skill level.

I am so tired of arguing for a player with a bunch of guys who want there player. We are all idiots because we keep regurgitating the same S&*T over and over again like it will change someone's opinion. Ultimately, it doesn't matter because Nick Caserio is probably going to do something absolutely over thought like drafting Derek Stingley over Sauce Gardner again.....

    Oh well.

    Things we know.

    Texans love Will Anderson
Texans view CJ Stroud as a 1a/1b with Bryce Young per the Leading College Scouting Coordinator
Texans told candidates that they would be taking a QB at top of draft
Demeco Ryans echoed similar sentiment about 2 QB's being at the TOP of the draft and them adding one to the team
Texans have inquired about the Cardinals pick at 3

Personally, there has been more legit smoke about the scenario that Daniel Jeremiah is talking about.

I feel like the better trade partner is 5 with Seattle, but we will see.

We don’t really know how they feel about Anderson or Stroud. We have heard rumors but we don’t know.

Players who feel disrespected by the draft process often display a heightened on field motivation to prove the process wrong. That worries me a little since the “disrespected” of this draft appears to be C.J. Stroud who could very well land with a division rival even if I understand some of the reasons that have been made public about passing on Stroud. I, personally, would feel a lot better about passing on QB at #2 if I was assured an Anthony Richardson or Will Levis would be available at 12, and that the Texans would draft one of these QB’s at 12 if that was indeed the case. Given the uncertainties about all QBs not named Bryce Young, I also find myself a lot more interested in taking the gamble on the physical specimen experiment that would be Richardson, but it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen.

Anthony Richardson would be a great get at 12.

Really doubt he makes it there. I could see a formula where he is groomed much like Jalen Hurts in Philly.

Arm strength and running ability make him a real threat as a homerun player.

If he fails, just put him at TE and let him dominate the league receiving the ball LOL. He probably could.
