    Nate Silver Out at ABC News as Disney Layoffs Once Again Hit News Division

    ABC News is expected to retain the FiveThirtyEight brand, with plans to streamline the data-driven site.

    “ABC News remains dedicated to data journalism with a core focus on politics, the economy and enterprise reporting — this streamlined structure will allow us to be more closely aligned with our priorities for the 2024 election and beyond,” an ABC News spokesperson said in a statement. “We are grateful for the invaluable contributions of the team members who will be departing the organization and know they will continue to make an important impact on the future of journalism.”

    I'll be honest. I didn't even know that 538 was owned by ABC.

    Also Nate was ahead of the game back in the early 2010's with the polling and sports models, but nowadays aggregate polling data is nothing special. I like 538's stuff, but there hasn't been anything truly groundbreaking found in their data models since 2016 if even then.

    Nate Silver would probably be best served going to work for a sports front office honestly.

    This is mostly true (they're not trailblazing in analytics anymore) but they have shifted to a fairly decent media/polling commentary operation.

    My guess is just that Nate wasn't worth his pricetag. You can get a similarly fugly nerd on to talk about polls whenever you want for a lot less money I'm guessing.

    Unlike Don or Tucker, Nate had actually provided a service. That being said, I don't know the details of the ending of his contract.

    IIRC he was basically just a contributor/commentator... Same as those talking heads, just without a show of his own.

    Nate and 538 were pretty insufferable in the 2020 cycle.

    They had their day back in 08-12 but the whole data journo schtick has gotten kind of stale, at least in some areas.
