The GOP doesn't give a crap about Christianity, it's just a means to an end. They have the gullible votes like a bird in hand and it allows them to expand authoritarian control over the population by using "religion" to their benefit. ...and that's coming from a Catholic.

I've been humoring your line of inquiry, but it was ridiculous from the start. Harmlessness is totally irrelevant and honestly one of the dumbest arguments I've ever seen you defend. This bill is clearly out of line with how we've understood freedom of religion for the past half-century at least. Allowing there's an outside chance the current SCOTUS could turn the whole thing on its head, the main problem with this bill is that it would promote one faith in a government institution. Other considerations, like what harm could it do, are beside the point.

IIRC, the bill was written to allow any religion to participate (clever way to insert the dominant religion into US public schools). Given this Supreme Court's track record of ruling in favor of religious freedom, I estimate there's a 60% chance of a favorable ruling. The probability is only 60% because of the potential for a huge political backlash.

If I recall the Church if Satan did get a Satanic statue put on OK state grounds over a similar bill.

Pffft I doubt most school in Texas will allow Islamic symbols much less text plaster in the classroom. The conservatives will get triggered by it make a complaint, school prob obliges to take it down causing the minority to sue.

You give with the left hand and take away with the right. You pretend like the supposed benefits of the moral tenets of the ten commandments make a jot of difference as to whether they should be allowed, but they don't.

    Like the government.

Anyway, you quoted the part where I literally said the government should be neutral and not promote one religion over another (or over no religion).

Not sure what you don't understand about that.

It's possible to both hold the opinion that government should not do that, but that the values contained in most of the ten commandments aren't bad.

Like, I like t*tties, doesn't mean government should shove them in everyone's face.

The bill specifies it must be the 10 Commandments, and it includes the verbatim text that must be used -- which is the King James Version translation of the bible (even picking which translation to use is a denominational flashpoint). The bill is built basically like the In God We Trust poster law -- people can donate posters to the school and they must be displayed. I don't see any attempt in this bill to be non-discriminatory.

    Here's the text: 88(R) SB 1515 - Engrossed version (texas.gov)

The 10 commandments are a Judaism thing - it's not about Christianity guys, c'mon.

Lol to pretend there is any value in posting up the ten commandments is very telling of how your brain works. Maybe you did need a poster on the wall to remind you not to rape and murder people.

I confused this with another TX bill that set time aside for employees and students to read the bible or other religous texts.

That one, surprisingly, is not too bad. The provisions of the bill go out of their way to make sure that this prayer time does not impinge on people who don't consent. It can't take up instructional time, you have to sign a consent waiver to participate, and you can't participate within earshot of those not participating. It still provides cover for a majority-evangelical school to apply peer pressure on students to participate in some group prayer time (like the football coach case), but it probably survives court review, I'd think.

So do you think the commandments that thou shalt have no other God but me, thou shalt not make graven images, and thou shalt keep the Sabbath is being neutral regarding religion?

The values contained in most of the ten commandments aren't bad. Pfffffft

The values contained in other religion ain't bad either, how come only Christianity is getting forced down our kids throat when the other religion isn't included?

The funny thing about atw and right leaning folks is when the government is doing something they agrees with, they downplays it with not that bad or other mental gymnastics.

But masks and covid vaccinations? Triggered as fk.

I saw someone wrote this about religion

Simple morals come from within. Not from a bronze age book of fairy tales.

    Good men do good things
    Bad men do bad things
    Religious men do horrible things

Keep the religion stuff at home or at the place of prayer.

So you don’t think government should be pushing religion yet you think pushing Judeo Christian values is good.
