I don't really have a whole lot to say, and I haven't followed these threads here. We have a 24-year-old daughter who came out as 'nonbinary' about two years ago. I'm not even sure anymore if that even counts as transgender. At the time she changed her name to a male name, and wanted to be labeled they/them. It took me quite a while to switch over to the male name (it didn't help that she chose a name we had previously used on a pet dog). I still can't do the they/them thing. Most of her conversations about the whole thing have been with my wife and with my other daughter. Initially she was talking about things like having her breasts removed, but those issues seem to have subsided. I don't know that I would make any generalizations from our experience. I do think that in our child's case, the decision seems to have been more political than exclusively biological: i.e., I think the "choice" to identify as non-binary is a decision many adolescents make today to demonstrate solidarity with trans- and other-identities rather than it being a decision to correct more deeply-rooted biological/psychological/genetic impulses.
Even if that account is not genuine and heartfelt (I'm treating it as it is), people need to understand self-identity and actualization can take well over 30 years to grasp. Sexual preferences are more and more acknowledged as fluid, so it doesn't sound far off that sexual identity can be fluid for some people as well. The general aspiration we pile on people is that once you're in college, you have a good idea what your career will be and once you're out, you're ready to live your life and know when you want a family. Obviously "they" and popular media lied to weave a cultural narrative and a shared experience. Recognizing that, it sounds insane to push this kind of therapy to kids who don't fit a particular mold. I don't follow JK Rowling but some of her controversial points had this in mind. It's just the most vocal members of the trans community were deadest against her views because it threatened "their" reality. I'm not saying their voice is not legit, but they also share a strong survivorship bias, and that group is also extremely vocal at getting their voice heard due to past negative experiences. I'm fine with treating both as right. The organized response for trans acceptance is mostly ripped off the homosexual acceptance playbook decades ago. The problem came with the slogan "homosexuality is not a choice". It certainly isnt for the extremes on the Kinsey scale, but that's on the extremes of the bell curve. Those who are on smaller standard deviations may certainly view homosexuality as a choice. But social movements need to stand united! It became a uniform black and white response. This is despite drugs and booze be able to change that response for some people then waking up the next day regretting their decision, but walkimg away from it feeling the same as before. With trans therapy, you can't wake up the next day, regret the decisions from before, and take back all the decisions with a complete reset. Much like having kids before one's ready, life doesn't really work out like that.
Yeah whatever, I tuned her out after she started talking authoritatively about mental disorders when she isn’t a psychiatrist or doctor…. I do wonder if she would let me play in her kitty box though…
Notice how there is one tweet decrying that Democrats are allowing children to get gender affirming care without parental consent followed by another tweet posted by the same poster criticizing parents for allowing children to have gender affirming care. This just shows that “parental rights” isn’t the issue here. It’s just cover and more conflation of the issue.
"gender affirming care" is a typical example for how the Left uses positive framing it sounds so positive but it's not "gender affirming" it's a mutilating sex change, or a chemical sex change
The manipulation of language isn't limited to one side of the political spectrum. I agree that "gender affirming care" is linguistically nebulous and can be used to to blur what that actually means. Remember "enhanced interrogation techniques"?
1) Normally branding/language manipulation is the province of the right. Not hating either, they're really good at it. The left can't market their ideas for **** (except the bad ones, apparently). 2) "Gender affirming care" is a spectrum. Cutting people up is one far, far end of it. The real problem with "gender affirming care" is that it outlaws any type of therapy that would disabuse the individual of their gender dysphoria. That's not how medicine works.
Agreed that it isn't limited to one side. My personal impression is that it happens more from the Left, but I might be wrong.
No man. You are a moderate rational human who spends hours per week b****ing about transgender people on a Houston Rockets team message board. Why would you think your perception might be wrong here?
This is strange. Children watch R rated movies if not outright p*rn all the time. They play mature audience video games all the time and you never posted about any of it. Yet you have dozens of posts about this strange stuff. I guarantee you that all of the things I mentioned happened with a greater frequency than these drag shows.
This is all starting to feel like a Rorschach test. You can tell from the caption... "cross-dressing men take cash tips from children as they dance like strippers". MAXIMUM SCANDALOUS! I see this as drag performers doing drag stuff (PG rated at that). For some people, drag is inherently sexual and will never be appropriate for anyone under... whatever arbitrary age apron they choose. To those folks I say, good for you, keep your own kids away from this if you choose. I won't take my kids to a Hooters until they're older for the exact same reason.
