The mayor of Ft. Lauderdale said it was a 1,000 year flood. Well, not anymore.

While you should not often expect deluges like that, you should absolutely plan for not only that, but more. Every bit of new civic infrastructure should well exceed current tolerances. Every bit of old infrastructure should be upgraded.

Yes, I do doom scroll, but it's kind of my job.

Here's a story on a new problem for Europe: Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever.

And then you have Dengue Fever making headway in Europe too.

She had the right mix of being confident, but not cocky.

Over the years, KTRK (ABC 13) has done a respectable job finding talent. There does seem to be a decent amount of politics/favortism at that station, but maybe that is how the TV business is across the country.

Heat wave in India. On Sunday, 11 people died at an outdoor political rally from heat stroke and dehydration. For reference, 36.8 degrees Celsius is about 98 degrees Fahrenheit, 44 = 111.

India and other places on the southern half of Asia have a wet bulb problem. Wet bulb measurements mimic a human's ability to cool itself through sweat. If the temp is over 40 degrees Celsius (104) and the humidity above 75%, it starts to cause problems for humans as they can no longer cool themselves. It also causes big issues for air conditioners. Not surprisingly, AC use in India has skyrocketed in recent years which means their mostly coal-powered plants are struggling to meet the demand for electricity since this heatwave began last week. Also, it reached 45 degrees Celsius (113) in Thailand last week, a record.

It has communications that apparently have failed. It also has an auto rise safety mechanism that surfaces the craft if it experiences issues. Prevailing though is that it is caught in the wreckage and cannot surface. The weather has been spotty in that area and they think changes to current patterns may have pushed the craft into the wreckage and it got stuck.

Supposedly it has 7 different backup systems that would allow the craft to float to the surface even without power.

This extreme tourism crap has got to end. No matter how wealthy you are, you can't make the bottom of the ocean, the top of Everest, the Sahara, volcanoes, or space into Disneyland. We live in a dangerous world but have been able to do some things in everyday life that reduce the risk. However, there are still places that are unforgiving and will kill you in ways that hurts a lot. Add that to a for-profit outfit that argued against standards for their sub and I can't wrap my head around it anymore than I can with Antarctic tourism. Just insane.

Being trapped in a small sub at the bottom of the ocean would be one of my worst nightmares.

At the minimum if they find them alive they should pay for the expense of the rescue.

This has always been my argument. The risk isn't that you die. the risk is you need to pick up the actual bill for rescue. So if you have millions of dollars to pay for the rescue, fine. If you are a chinese woman who scammed sherpas out of thousands you promised them, shame on you.

A bunch of Coast Guard/Park Service/Fire/Police/Search and Rescue employees, none of whom are making over $120,000 per year and most who are either volunteers or making between $25-50,000 on call to put their lives at risk for idiot rich people? No thanks. Those folks know what they sign up for and being a backstop for wealthy stupidity isn't one of those things.

One of the fail-safes was allegedly a device that would bring the submersible back to the surface after 14 hours, automatically, even if everyone aboard was already dead. The main ship waited an hour after the 14- hour point of submersion to call the loss of communication in. They waited to see if they would surface before calling it in.

It's almost certain that there was a hole breach and they all died almost instantly. Which is probably the best way they could have gone in this situation.
