This is the other galling thing about it. I liked my first jury experience, heard an interesting case, learned something, and felt I did something civically important. Since then, my jury experiences have made me feel exploited and manipulated. But I still go when I'm summoned. So, to have a governor immediately undermine the jury even before sentencing (which seems like tampering, btw) feels like he just pissed on all the jurors in the state. This is not a case of a leader extending mercy to a guilty convict nor a case of a leader saving someone from a haywire court boondoggle or an activist judge -- he literally is saying the jury did their job wrong and they can't really be empowered to make this decision. He yanked our representation. Just like Republicans have done with HISD control, Tennessee Three, gerrymandering, election denying, and everything else. Even if Abbott was right about the man's guilt or innocence, it's still offensive to have a governor say a jury's decision will only be respected if they decide one way.

austin chronicle has a great summary of the case in their latest issue. one new piece of evidence i was not aware of was that perry actually said in his first interview with detectives that foster was NOT pointing the AK-47 at him. and also that he lied when he said he was texting and didnt see the crowd when he turned right on a red and drove into the crowd.

    https://www.austinchronicle.com/new...h42R_abajqJNhp0zcBhkygtTmmxyXjz2LoDlcmu53Jf3g

Perry was interviewed by senior homicide Detective David Fugitt, a recently retired officer who remains a legend at APD. In a video played at the trial, Fugitt, seated, asked Perry, standing in front of him, to demonstrate how Foster had held the AK. Perry seems uncertain but holds an imaginary rifle pointed down at the officer. "I believe he was going to aim it at me," he stammers. "I didn't want to give him a chance to aim it at me, you know?" Fugitt later testified that he thought Perry had a legitimate claim of self-defense. He let him go.

Guess I'm still not done being mad about Abbott. If you're a juror on this case and still need to decide about sentencing, knowing that Abbott publicly declared he'd pardon the guy you just convicted, how does that impact your sentencing decision? Do you not try very hard, since your work will be undone anyway? Do you give a harsher sentence as a middle finger to the governor? Do you give a lighter sentence hoping perhaps to dampen the demand for a pardon? Can a juror really just put that news aside and be unaffected in making a sentencing decision?

So on top of the (1) committing to pardon a murderer for partisan gain and (2) undermining the trust put into our juries in our justice system, I'm also mad that (3) he opened his fat mouth while the jury is still impaneled and at work, potentially impacting the sentencing outcome in unpredictable ways.

Greg Abbott is such a disgusting pig of a man, and such a terrible Governor. He really is. I can't stand that man. He repulses me. I'm not sure who disgusts me more actually between Paxton, Cruz, and Abbott. Those three are just horrible human beings.

Kari Lake should be in a mental institution

She’s been saying this sh*t for months. Who is she even talking to at this point? She’s always on some fringe show nobody knows about.

word is that the judge actually suppressed a bunch of those posts/tweets at the trial b/c they were so damning against perry that they would prejudice the jury. supposedly, there are also posts where he talks about wanting to hook up with 16-17 year old girls. its all going to be coming out very soon.

HOLY S***! text messages where he admits to hitting and possibly killing a black pedestrian (cops let him go). another incident where he was arrested for DWI. sexually explicit texts with someone he knew to be underage.

if this stuff is true then perry should never see the light of day again. i cant believe we had people on this message board defending this scumbag. yall should be ashamed of yourselves...abbott too. even even half of this stuff is true its going to really bite him in the ass.

...and that's who Abbott wants to pardon on behalf of the 'law and order' party. Saddest thing is, he knows that pardoning a psychotic POS that killed a BLM protestor will actually get him some points with a section of his voter base in this state.

Again, it's a real mystery why the GOP gets tagged as racist so often. A real head scratcher.

It's upside down virtue signalling to his voter base.

“Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney,” Abbot wrote. “Unlike the President or some other states, the Texas Constitution limits the Governor’s pardon authority to only act on a recommendation by the Board of Pardons and Paroles. Texas law DOES allow the Governor to request the Board of Pardons and Paroles to determine if a person should be granted a pardon. I have made that request and instructed the Board to expedite its review.”

“I look forward to approving the Board’s pardon recommendation as soon as it hits my desk,” he said.

This type of **** feels like the natural outcome of open carry combined with ridiculous stand your ground laws.

Might as well call it the Jimbo law.

perry sounds delusional or mentally ill. he actually thinks that BLM is going to take his moms house and come after him for hitting a pedestrian.

as far as the black pedestrian he hit and killed...in hindsight, one must wonder if he didnt do that on purpose too.

as for the cops, will they be held accountable for letting him go for killing a pedestrian and also not charging him with a DWI. im guessing that because he was active duty military the cops let him get away with those things.
