Oh look, Republicans in TN (and everywhere) won't budge or do anything about school shootings except make it even easier for anyone to access guns. But protesting through chanting is absolutely crossing the line for Republicans. Extraordinary actions are needed quickly to curb such behavior. Tennessee House moves to expel 3 Democrats after gun protest | AP News NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Republican lawmakers took the first steps Monday to expel three Democratic members from the GOP-dominant House for their role in a recent gun control protest at the state Capitol. The extraordinarily rare move resulted in a chaotic and fiery confrontation between lawmakers and supporters opposing the move and has further fractured an already deep political division inside the Tennessee Legislature. Resolutions have been filed against Reps. Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson after they led chants from the House floor with supporters in the gallery last Thursday. The resolution declared that the three had participated in “disorderly behavior” and “did knowingly and intentionally bring disorder and dishonor to the House of Representatives.”
Oklahoma should legalize more guns so this doesn’t happen again. https://www.koco.com/amp/article/university-of-oklahoma-active-shooter-situation/43543786
There were other armed individuals in the Nashville school yet that didn’t stol the shooter from targeting that school. The right likes to accuse others of virtue signaling yet these bills that are largely meaningless or worse are virtue signalling to those who share their own views.
totally agree, one overweight security guard may not be enough. The arming of personnel must be far more pervasive (voluntary, but financially incentivized). Texas has the Marshal and Guardian programs for funding armed personnel.
I actually support more armed LEO in schools. I don’t think armed civilians though are the answer. You’re asking for a much greater burden out on teachers and others than what they currently have. my main point is that this school wasn’t a gun fees zone. Nor have many of the other mass shootings been gun free zones. Passing a law banning gun free zones does nothing.
I was discussing this topic with some others last night including a couple of gun owners. I’ll state again that it’s completely unrealistic and impractical to expect any mass attempt to disarm the us population. What we need though is far more responsibility about firearms. Things like red flag laws and more stringent background checks should be something all responsible firearm owners should be for. Further cracking down on illegal obtained or manufactured weapons. Mandatory training and regulations on safe storage and handling. Yes there is a right to own firearms but there is no such thing as an unlimited right for anything. In a civil society rights should also be coupled with responsibility.
We just had to renew our security contract where I work. Armed guard is $28/hr. Google says there are 8,161 public schools in Texas. Need at least 2 guards a day to cover roughly 10 hours over 180 instructional days. So 8161 x 2 x 10 x 180 x $28 = $823 million Guess I need to get into the security business.
I would really love safety courses and refreshers, every 7 years to be a requirement. I think instilling respect and knowledge about guns would help reduce accidental shootings, as well as using guns to commit crimes. Make them a requirement for legislators too, so they understand at least a little bit about the guns they are discussing in legislation.
I am not sure I would risk my child`s well-being on an armed guard who makes $28/hr.......if I am the guy making $28/hr, I am not sure I would be willing to die.......................for $28/hr. Let's do this, one parent in each family should have to be trained in gun safety and then 5-10 have to volunteer every day to protect the children, problem solved
"There’s never been a school shooting in the hundreds of schools that allow staff to carry." - Rep Massie Staff members of the Covenant School carried guns.
