Luka and Kyrie as crunch time defenders is a recipe for disaster. Hope they re-sign Wood as well and give him a starter spot.

they have no choice but to re-sign him

they can’t afford to lose him…no one anywhere near his caliber is going to Dallas

they have to re-sign him, hope and pray he doesn’t get to crazy, and try to surround him and Luka with some defenders

Kyrie Irving (and Russel Westbrook) somehow make teams worse.

Hopefully OKC and the CHI lose out so Dallas can finish outside the top 10 and lose that pick to NY. They play CHI next.

To be fair, I think Russ actually was really good during his prime in OKC. He had the perfect situation because KD is a superstar who can play well off the ball. If they had kept Westbrook/Durant/Harden/Ibaka together they would have won a title at some point, I think.

With us, it was a bad fit alongside Harden (with both as starters) who is also ball-dominant. And now Westbrook is in his 30s and the athleticism just isn't the same, for a player who always relied heavily on his explosiveness, never developed a good jump shot, and has mainly been a reactionary passer, not a high-IQ playmaker. Although: He's one of the best reactionary passers I've seen play the game, so there's that.

He was just one of those players where you have to build around them in a particular way if you want to contend. Not a superstar who can play just as well off the ball and fits into any team, like Curry, or an all-quadrants beast like LeBron who is good at literally everything so it almost doesn't matter who you put around him as long as he has good players to work with.

Wow, Mavs openly tanking to "protect their draft position", even though they could still get into the play-in. That's bad.

I'm confused. The Mavericks aren't mathematically eliminated yet, yet Kyrie and Doncic aren't playing tonight. Have they given up?
