If we don't draft a PG and don't land Harden, who do you want playing point guard next season?

I vote to trade for Lowry, and then hire Nurse

That's the head coach and starting PG for a championship team from 4 years ago, yes Lowry is old as balls and isn't half the player he was, but we're talking about instilling a good culture and a functional offense here, bringing in Lowry and Nurse together feels like a really solid path for that.

Lowry has not been a starting caliber pg for a long time. he stinks now. The rockets have no business going after him

The good thing is he has 0 reason to come here anyway, thankfully

Lowry would be a great mentor for whomever we have at PG.

It would be about instilling culture and a better offensive system, it's not with the thought that Lowry is a long-term solution or would be bringing major production. He'd be an expiring, he'd be a vet. This thread is about options if we don't land Harden nor a PG in this years draft. Lowry feels like a great option to help the youth and culture grow IMO.

Lowry isn't even a good option for a team full of vets who are trying to win now. His impact these days is irrelevant. 37 year old nearing retirement making $30 mil next year. Yikes

I don't think he would play a ton of minutes, but he would be a great guy to mentor the youngsters, especially if we draft a really raw point guard like Amen Thompson.

a 37 year old lowry who should be on vet min doesn't matter. He doesn't in Miami and he certainly wouldn't here

I just do think it would be really helpful to have a "coach on the floor" kind of player for this young group. I also think it would be a good idea to preserve cap space for 2024 unless we're getting a player (like one of the Jones brothers) who we think might factor in long-term, i.e. a few years from now when we might be ready to legitimately contend.

Too many people on this board worried about overpaying a free agent, or whether a player is the exact right on court fit with our young guys

Consider the ways the Harden era has shaped and skewed how we think about the team building and GM moves. We're scarred by Ryan Anderson and John Wall's overpaid contracts, and by Russell Westbrook's bad fit, so we think these are the most important concerns going into decisions this summer. "I'd pay FVV $25MM but not a penny more!" or "We need to make sure our draft pick fits around our best players !".

That's not how it works for us anymore. We are about as unconstrained by those concerns as any team in the history of the NBA. We have no stars, nobody older than 22, no tanking incentive, and functionally infinite cap space.

The truth is that contract bargains and fit around our existing players are just not our biggest concerns this offseason. We care about acquiring (1) starter-level NBA players (2) who are interested in being here.

There are only about 10 starter level players with a legit possibility of signing with a new team this offseason, and 7-8 teams with >$30M in space. If we can get 1 to take our money I'll be incredibly happy, if we can get 2 it'll be a miracle and Stone is a god.

So we should thank our lucky stars if we end up with Harden or FVV. We're price takers in the market -- those guys are getting whatever the market values them at plus or minus a few million and choosing where they want to be. Hopefully one of them chooses us.

If you had asked me this question early in the season - If no Harden or early draft pick then who? - the answer would most assuredly have been FVV.
But lets be honest here - he's had a very poor season and I cannot see him being worth the contract it would require to get him here. I can't give that guy $46.5m in year one of 4. You'd regret it as soon as you inked that deal.

Coming up with an answer today feels impossible. The FA market is barren of top talent aside from Harden.
There really is no obvious answer.

Maybe make Atlanta an offer for Dejounte Murray who's UFA next year.

Worse case, punt on the position, as much as it hurts to do, until next offseason when there's a better crop of point guards hitting the market.

Starting PG Tyus Jones by a mile.. Backup Lowry if he plays 20 minutes or less .. KPJ as an additional secondary PG/6th man/closer

I'd love to get Tyus Jones, I just don't see Memphis trading him, at all.

He protects the ball so well, almost never turns it over.

I'd take FVV at $30m a year because it leaves enough to add another full max player along with him.

But that's not gonna happen, he's gonna want the max and that's $45m next year.

That's simply too much for his impact.
