Something has been off with this team for a bit. Not sure if it's Sampson dealing with his personal stuff or the injuries or what. But this team hadn't looked like itself in some time. Finally did them in.
Tip your cap . Miami wanted nothing to do with a half court game. They have the athleticism and offensive skill to play the up and down game and make it work and they did exactly that. Their D was pretty much on point also. Regardless it’s hard to beat any team that shoots 51% FG and 44% from three when you shoot 37% and 29%. I believe we had one lead the entire time so again MIA ran them.
Roberts stopped being part of the offense is one thing I noticed. He was pretty effective with that hook shot during the regular season. It helped our floor spacing and took some of the load off our backcourt guys. Dunno. Maybe the postseason bigs were better post defenders.
Coogs get the #1 seed in a historic tournament where no #1 reaches the Elite 8 (first time ever) Day's end, Houston's record and stats were inflated by playing in a subpar conference. Injuries are also a factor They have done very well these past few years and hopefully they continue to attract more talent
I came to this thread to post this exact message Houston needs better shooters not just athletes and we need to be able to go deeper in our bench just like texas is doing.
Coogs had/have shooters they just don't have a cohesive halfcourt offense. It's literally been the same problem for 5+ years
Cougars need more talented dynamic scorers. Outside of Sasser and Travon Mark (who’s also inconsistent in scoring 15 or more points) there are no consistent scorers or bucket getters who can get you 18- 20 points a game on a consistent basis. Their defense this season has been Elite usually but not tonight and their offense this season was never elite at all to begin with but a little above average but not great. That’s where the Houston Cougars needs to work on this off season, finding them sharp shooters and real savage bucket getters to improve the dynamics of this team since Sasser and Walker are gone.
There were about 25 guys spread out over 378 teams who averaged 20 ppg. Those teams include Coppin State, Wright State, Hofstra and a host of other smaller schools that didn’t make the tournament at all. Those teams that do have 1 of those guys have 1 and not 2 or 3. Consistent scoring is a problem for virtually everyone in college basketball. The exceptions to that historically have been subpar defensive teams. The key in college hoops is to be able to survive your worst game on the offensive end. UH was built to do that and win. What they weren’t built to do was outscore a team that scored 90 on them and just shot the lights out. Sometimes you get outplayed…you just get beat. Great teams lose in the tourney every year. Cougar fans know that as well or better than anyone given Phi Slamma Jama. You hope to keep getting there so that eventually the kids who are 18-22 finally get hot through the tourney games. It’s way more of a crap shoot than the NBA playoffs.
