Desantis seeks to punish Disney for disagreeing with him

That is the trap that destroys whatever these fake libertarians say on the surface. It isn't the principle of binding governments to do nothing with laissez faire policies, it's running 180 with it to weaponize the state to do what you personally want them to.

I'm not saying the other side of the aisle has the higher ground, more like we're all similar than we'd like to admit in our approaches to solving things. Instead of polar opposites, we are different sides of the same coin. We're too prideful to admit that in our crusade to purge evil and Save America or Humanity.

Even the original statement of wanting Disney to go back to apolitical bread and circuses is flawed. Disney still wields money and power upon the general public and even if they went uh...un woke (doubtful), many of whom were bitten once are now twice shy.

The cultural wars both sides have played are now spilling over what seems like every institution of power or influence. Adding fuel to the fire is our natural distrust (and growing dislike) for any global conglomerate that can know more about our daily details than any person could.

 

Except the Last of Us isn't original content as it was adapted from a game. I've not played the game but from my undersstanding the gay romance is played up even more in the series than in the game story.

Sure if you just talk about Disney but that is one case. You would agree that the issue of "wokeness" isn't just a Disney phenomena. DeSantis did go after the Tampa Rays for ideological reasons.

Except that you're arguing that "wokeness" is what is causing the problem yet I've shown examples of where "wokeness" isn't a problem for entertainment. So in other words you are judging things by political feelings.

I've said this before. "Wokeness" in and of itself doesn't make for good entertainment. I criticized the Rings of Power for changing up the racial make up of people of Middle Earth for seemingly no artistic reason. I heavily criticized the Star Wars sequels for cramming in "woke" messages that just seemed poorly thought out and distracting. There are tons of crap produced that are about white hetorosexuals in traditional relationships out there. There are plenty of studios, writers, and other creative people who didn't go woke yet still went broke.

The point is the problems of Disney have less to do with woke than that it's hard to sustain success over the long period with long running franchises. Every long running franchise (Batman, James Bond, Star Trek) has made crap. More importantly though it's less about woke or not woke but about things that always matter, a good story, good acting, and good directing.

That DeSantis and others are targetting Disney is the opposite of what you're arguing. They are specifically going after Disney because of their feelings. Because they are offended over perceived "wokeness."

 

The game literally had a letter you picked up and read that hinted at his gay relationship. That's it. So ya the TV series drastically elaborated on it. And it made the story better.

I think it's not just that it's a combination of retread material it's getting boring plus the woke lazy writing- in a bubble perhaps it's not getting a fair shake, but when that show has gotten lumped in with the successive bad shows due to predominantly lazy writing, then that's gonna be the net effect

 

There's a lot to digest here, but I think the last of us is pretty much original programming. I don't think there's anything retread going on. I agree with you good acting , a good story, and non-lazy writing is going to be a success, and more cases are not. It could be a story about a right wing ideology and if it's done right, then great or it could be left wing as well

I don't think DeSantis is particularly trying to punish Disney, but he is trying to equalize what corporations get versus other corporations, and I think that's fair that in itself- Disney has enjoyed 50 years of privileged treatment, so maybe examining that is actually a good thing plus more than anything they need to come up with something better- constant 80 percent lazy woke programming is not cutting it obviously- at least don't be lazy - show some realness and not idealness

Disney tells DeSantis to f*uck off by booking a large LGBT conference for 2023 and 2024.

Disney has had a longstanding relationship with Out & Equal, the organization behind the event, and is listed on its website as one of its most generous sponsors.

The Florida resort has committed to hosting the conference this year and next, which will coincide with the presidential election campaign in 2024. DeSantis is widely expected to challenge Donald Trump for the Republican nomination.

Michael Chamberlain, chief marketing officer for Out & Equal, confirmed the conference would be held at The Walt Disney World Resort from Sept. 11-14. Last year’s summit was held in Las Vegas.

Dozens of iconic American companies — including Apple, McDonald’s, Uber, Walmart, Hilton, Amazon, Boeing, Cracker Barrel and John Deere — are sponsoring the Out & Equal Workplace summit, which over 5,000 people are expected to attend. Several agencies, including the State Department and the CIA, are listed as government partners and will have booths at the conference.

The conference comes after DeSantis declared victory over Disney in February when he signed a law that gave him the power to appoint a five-member board overseeing government services at the Disney district near Orlando.​

Disney made $3 billion in net income last year. They're doing alright.

 

What's interesting to me is Antman and Wasp: Quantamania did alright? The critics did not like it but the audience liked given the 83% RT score it has.

I mean yeah, it's not breaking any sales records but could it be that people in general are just kind of over Marvel and that Disney oversaturated their own product to the point that people just aren't that excited to see every single Marvel release? I'm going with that, personally, I don't know. I just know many people that will just wait till these movies hit Disney+ now because there is basically one coming out every quarter it feels like.

Here is the thing too...like, if you want to tell Disney to stop being woke you have to actually be able to tell them what that is. What is Woke Lazy Writing? What does that mean?

I'm just wondering how the movie is woke. It stars a straight white couple fighting a villain and trying to save the universe (or multiverse) so I'm just wondering where the 'wokeness' is coming from. Seems like a pretty standard superhero movie.

Overall, they're doing OK, for now but where they're hurting is in the production business of shows such as Disney+ - do you understand they are cutting thousands of jobs and it's not because they're doing great otherwise that wouldn't be in the works

 

There is also the whole theater experience as a whole. I havent been to a movie theater since COVID. Not because of COVID, I just have no desire. I wait until things come out on streaming.
