I’m sorry but scripted offscript throws are not the same as in game. He has not shown outside of a couple games that he is capable of making off script plays or throws on the run.
He’s a lumbering pocket QB. That’s what he is

Stroud is super eager to hoop with McCown.

Do we know who the Texans will have at the Alabama pro day?

Texans already know who they want. They are spending their remaining time on later picks.

[…] From my understanding, the Colts don’t see a great deal of separation between the top four quarterback prospects, which is part of the reason they didn’t actively pursue a trade up with the Bears for the top pick. Each prospect — Stroud, Alabama’s Bryce Young, Florida’s Anthony Richardson and Kentucky’s Levis — is flawed to a certain extent, and Indianapolis wasn’t willing to give up a haul of draft picks to move up.

[…] Some league scouts have Stroud ranked ahead of Young, the more polished college quarterback. (Alabama’s pro day is Thursday.) Size helps. Stroud measured in Wednesday at 6 feet 3 and 213 pounds, while Young is under 6 feet and a shade over 200 pounds. Stroud’s motion is smooth, his mechanics sound. His release is efficient and compact, and it can almost feel effortless at times. Much like Richardson and Levis, there’s no need to question his arm strength. He flicked his wrist more than once Wednesday and the ball flew 50 yards.

But where he has seemingly separated himself from Levis and Richardson is with accuracy. Stroud labeled himself a “ball-placement specialist” at the combine, and this workout mostly backed that up. He was especially sharp leading his receivers, putting the ball where the defense can’t get to it. He even chided himself a few times when the pass wasn’t perfect — still catchable but not perfect.

“There was a couple that I missed, but overall, I think I had a pretty good day,” Stroud said.

He underthrew Harrison Jr. on one deep ball, overthrew another wideout on an out route, and struggled more than once when throwing on the run, especially to his left. But overall, it was an impressive statement for a player whose ascent in recent months — going back to his performance in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Georgia — very well could catapult him to the top of the draft.

[…] With assistance from his longtime quarterback coach, John Beck, the two made a script that showed off Stroud’s best qualities and skills he improved on during the offseason.

Beck said they made a conscious decision to show off Stroud’s mobility in the pocket.

“He’s outstanding on the downfield balls, but we wanted to show he could move off the spot and drive the ball to location,” Beck said. “When C.J. is on and spins it, that ball is driven really tight to different locations on the field. Start his eyes one way, go to the other side of the field through his progression. You saw some on-the-run throws today. Just a full slate of what could happen in the NFL.”

There’s been a narrative in Stroud’s career that he can’t move outside of the pocket. He didn’t look stiff at pro day, though, and showed off the same mobility that flashed on film from the Peach Bowl against Georgia.

“C.J. is an extremely athletic guy,” Beck said. “I’ll bring up the Georgia game. A lot of people got to see full C.J. in that game, taking off, using his athleticism and making throws. It was kind of like, ‘I’m going to show that’s there.’ He put a big emphasis on that this offseason because he wanted it to be part of his pro day.”

The only downside to Stroud on the run was missing four throws rolling and throwing to his left.

Beck doesn’t see the few missed throws as a problem, though. Stroud was never going to have a perfect day; it was more about how the ball looked coming out of his hand.

“Not always are the people in the back (NFL scouts) expecting every ball to be completed, but they want to see it come off his hand,” Beck said. “What does it look like? How does it spin? … The way the ball was driven, that’s what matters.”

The rest of Stroud’s day was nearly perfect. His deep ball was accurate and showed off a good touch. His best throw, also his last, was a perfect go route to wide receiver Jayden Ballard after evading pressure and stepping up.

That was also Stroud’s favorite throw.

“That last one felt good,” he said. “There’s a couple I missed, but I think I had an overall pretty good day.”

[…] Unlike the 5-foot-10 Young, Stroud has the size that new Panthers coach Frank Reich seems to prefer at quarterback. Stroud was measured at 6-foot-3 and 213 pounds Wednesday, one pound lighter than his combine weight.

Stroud didn’t run the 40, mostly because none of the teams asked him to. After showing off his trademark accuracy at the combine, Stroud and his quarterback coach John Beck designed Wednesday’s script to mix in some of the off-schedule throws that — until the College Football Playoff semifinal game against Georgia — Stroud hadn’t done much of during his two years as the Buckeyes’ starter.

By The Athletic’s unofficial count, Stroud completed 44 of 51 passes. Receivers dropped two of his throws, and Stroud’s five other incompletions came on throws to his left, four when he was throwing on the run.

Former NFL quarterback David Carr, who was part of the NFL Network’s broadcast team in Columbus, said that jibed with what he’d seen of Stroud on film.

“When he’s in rhythm, he’s as good as anybody,” Carr said. “The ball is nice. It comes out of his hand, it’s exactly where he wants it to be. And you can tell in talking to him, that’s where he wants to live. He wants to live in that space where he knows what the coverage is. He knows where he’s going with the ball. He can rip through his progressions. And you’re gonna get a great quarterback.”

Beck said he wanted to give the assembled GMs and coaches — including Mike Tomlin, Dennis Allen, Mike Vrabel, Pete Carroll and Brian Daboll, not all of whom need a QB — the “full C.J.” experience. That included some throws from the pocket and while scrambling.

Beck didn’t have a problem with Stroud’s misses to the left because the ball still “jumped off his hands.” And while acknowledging there’s no such thing as a perfect pro day, Beck added: “But he was close. It was really good.”

One veteran talent evaluator who was at Ohio State on Wednesday said Stroud showed he could make all the throws but seemed to get winded near the end of the workout. Stroud will get a chance to throw again during private workouts for many of the same teams, including the Panthers.

[…] If Stroud is the choice, the Panthers haven’t given any obvious clues, leaving everyone — Carr included — reading the tea leaves.

“I’ve tried to dig in,” said Carr, whose brother, Derek, talked with the Panthers at the combine before signing with New Orleans. “I’ve known Frank for a long time. I tried to like — nothing. These guys are impenetrable. Josh? Same thing. I’ve known Josh for 20 years. Nothing.

“They can’t go wrong, either one of these guys (are) excellent players,” Carr added, referring to Stroud and Young. “I think it’s one of those two. Because Josh didn’t give me other information after that. It was like, ‘I’m going to Alabama tomorrow and then I’m gonna go hang out with the family.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, so that’s it? No more pro days?’ So that might be a little bit of a tip.”

Or not. But Stroud is absolutely in the running.
