Don't really view the Iraq War as similar to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

Seems like I'm in the minority here, but I view not planning for the peace as the greater sin than getting rid of Saddam. I wish there was a better system to remove leaders who commit genocide, like Saddam. Also.... Iraq was about putting a strategic resource in a rapidly growing world under more stable hands if you want realpolitik.

It's crazy that you think "total victory" is bowing to putin. A ceasefire means Russia keeps all the land they currently occupy. Why the hell would America agree or ukraine for God's sakes agree to that? We just shipped them 400 ifv and hundreds of tanks.

You want them to give up all their land instead of attempt to recapture land now that they finally have proper equipment?!

It's funny how the media frames things for clicks. Instead of asking if they agree to a "ceasefire" the question is if you agree to Russia keeping all occupied land and that's the real question

    War mongers gonna war monger.

Just the fact anyone who thinks the US should decide on a ceasefire only shows this is.not going to turn out well.

This war is on Bidens watch just like Iraq and Afghanistan was on Bush's.

How much is the Kremlin paying you? Now you're spinning low level Russian propaganda. Funny how that's always the arc the "anti war" folks always take.

In the HISD thread you decided to STFU and not comment on the thread cuz claimed not to be knowledgeable on the topic when in reality it was cuz you couldn't defend his fascist actions.

You decided not to defend Abbott cuz you knew his actions were indefensible. You stated you "didn't know enough" to comment when in reality there was no defense to him taking over the school board. You coming in and comparing ukraine to bush Iraq shows you're just full of **** Nd don't care if you're "knowledgeable" or not.

Anyone who blames biden or usa for putin invading is nothing other than a Russian stooge including you.

From your posts in this thread, I thought you'd be ecstatic the US is promoting total victory for Slava Ukraine

Maybe I was unclear. I do not want Ukraine to give up all their land. I was talking about conservatives like Commodore. If it was a Republican President like Trump Commodore would be totally switched and he would not have any skepticism about the US supporting Ukraine unlimitedly or sort of weirdly acting like he is for negotiations to end the war etc. Commodore would be urging unlimited support for Ukraine and until Ukraine achieved "total victory" for Ukraine (no matter how unrealistic) and no negotiations until not one inch of Ukraine was occupied by Russia including Crimea.

My own prediction is that Ukraine has achieved all it likely to achieve. Ukraine will have a Spring Offensive that will probably stall out. The current Russian offensive will go nowhere. There will after conceivably hundreds of thousands of more deaths and incredible more destruction of Ukraine there will be a negotiated peace or a hostile new border (like in Korea) which results in roughly the borders that existed before Putin attacked with Russia remaining in some of the disputed border areas they were in in Dombass. Ukraine will eventually get into NATO. Putin will not have achieved his original objectives of conquering Kiev or installing a puppet government there.

Here is an article on Ukraine which I pretty much agree with that reviews recent proxy wars ,including many of the recent American ones. It almost never goes well at all for the countries in which the proxy wars are fought.

First thing I learned as being an adult is to always check who the author is before you read a single word. When I googled Chris hedges I found this:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Hedges

I think I'll pass. I'm not interested in what someone has to say when they're literally being funded by the Russian government. I recommend you to always check the authors as a rule of thumb in life.

It will help save you tons of time in life.

Basso wants to see biden fail before anything else.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised people are likening the US invasion and occupation of Iraq to Ukraine. From the US standpoint these are nothing alike. US troops are not fighting and planning on occupying Ukraine.

    The US is arming a
Democratically elected government against a war of aggression. There are some similarities to the first Gulf War but Zelensky isn’t the Emir of Kuwait and again US troops aren’t fighting the war.

That is an extremely cynical view.

Biden did not choose any of this. His previous administration he served as VP for tried like hell to bring Putin in and influence him to avoid this. He chose tyranny and chose to become a ruthless dictator. He chose to invade. Biden did not. Zelensky did not.

I refuse to understand why you give zero agency in context to Putin. Yeah… we can be cynical about how Americans are bloodthirsty and high and mighty at the same time. I get that. But your refusal to properly contextualize why things are actually happening is a bit disturbing for someone I know is smart and I know can objectively evaluate the facts as they are when you want to.

What I’m asking for here is a bit more contextualization. Some of the problems that come to the free world actually aren’t because of Democrats who aren’t as pure of a progressive as you are. Sometimes outside influences are to blame too.

Agreed on the conservatives who see Ukraine as just a way to f with Biden or Dems. Agreed it takes time to be informed. Well imho if one wants to be an informed adult you some learn not to make such simplistic snap judgments about sources. Just like Fox News or for that matter the NYT or MSNBC one should evaluate the source. Chris Hedges was a Pulitizer Prize winning long time international war correspondent for the NYT who covered Bosnia, Iraq, the Contras and our proxy wars in Central America etc. He' s a bit probably PTSD'd for my taste, but I consider him to be honest and not likely to cave to say Russia pressure. Hedges served as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times for 15 years, resigning after receiving a reprimand from The Times for publicly criticizing the Iraq war in 2003. In 2002, Hedges received a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting as part of a Times reporting team that profiled global terrorism both before and after the September 11 terrorist attacks. https://thehoya.com/journalist-chris-hedges-criticizes-corporate-influence-politics/

You could learn if you want that the CIA and US Intelligence funds or plants stories at times in publications like the NYT and Washington Post--ed often through anonymous sources or retired military guys who pose as disinterested "defense" experts. Does that mean they should always be disbelieved for always taken at face value? No. Talking about Iraq that is one of the reasons why so many Americans were deceived into war.

Ukraine will not give up any of their land just like nobody would expect the US to actively give up Texas if Mexico invaded the US in a far out future.

If there’s a peace settlement which requires Ukraine to give up such a huge piece of their territory, A. It would mean the US is meddling as the puppet master you guys are mad that they are acting as to begin with. B. It would mean that there’s potential for Ukraine to have counter insurgencies and for Ukraine to be more destabilized in the future.

The only peace agreement I could see Ukraine possibly being okay with is Crimea becoming their own country that Russia cannot take over. Ukraine will never be secure with Russia controlling Crimea. Russians in Crimea will also never be secure from Ukraine in the future as well as Ukrainians will always see their presence there as a threat.

Will Ukraine have to give away some land to get out of this war?? Yes probably unless they can negotiate Crimea as an independent country.

Will Biden step in to dictate terms to end the war tomorrow like you guys theorize he has the power to do?? .. he could but that would lead to a worse situation and it would again be Biden doing exactly what you are accusing him of being now and would be him being more Bush that anyone else. It would be the US playing puppet master and in the vacuum more war and violence ensuing.

Please in your mind realize that Putin and Zelensky have agency here we cannot control but it’s in our interest to help Zelensky and Ukraine. Not to go to war with Russia but we have an interest to make sure Putin does not succeed and Europe does not descend into war.

Hard to say I suppose commodore is a simplistic little guy almost a bot with strong fascist tendencies. Nothing good to see there. Biden is a coventional politician who was put in the Senate by business sources at 29 years old. In his early days Biden prided himself on being one if not the the most conservative Dems ( I believe old segregationist Dems had all switched to the GOP by his time). in the Senate.and who represents much of why the Dems have lost real power in Washington, why they can only largely talk a good line about helping the average American, while pleasing their big money funders, thereby making so many Americans cynical about government. Biden's best quality is that he is a chameleon so he can see which way the wind is blowing so he is becoming a bit less "Credit Card Joe" from Delaware Inc.

If Ukraine wants to accept a ceasefire then we should accept their answer.

Seems more like they are saying, “we’re not done damaging their military yet”

Agreed. A ceasefire leaves Russian soldiers on Ukrainian soil. Why would Ukraine agree to not shoot at them? Dude's just saying what should be blindingly obvious to everyone already. They can negotiate a peace deal while fighting though. No reason Putin needs a ceasefire to order his forces to retreat from Ukraine.

He asked if you were disappointed. How is it possible to be disappointed in someone you had no optimism for to begin with? Most progressives like me I know of have been pleasantly surprised even though they preferred Bernie or Warren.

Nobody is saying that Biden needs a cult to worship him like the right does with Trump, but Geezus some of you guys on the Noam Chomsky left just seem to be intentionally negative all the time in a way that actually reinforces the narrative that Republicans try to paint all liberals by.

Liz Warren had a great interview on the Sunday shows this week where she did a great job of contextualizing the Biden record. I don’t think having that type of outlook is that much to ask of the Bernie bro’s.

That doesn’t explain why he would then choose to work for Russia’s propaganda arm….

Truthfully… seems like Russia goes after folks like Hedges who can give credence to Russia’s point of view…. which is usually alt left or alt right.

There’s just a certain segment of progressives who truly believe America is the evil empire.
