Yes there are many documented instances of bright individuals overcoming their poverty conditions to be extremely successful. You see it in refugee communities and you see it in Black communities. What you are completely ignoring is the "middle". The average person. See when one race of people have 10x more wealth per median household that means a lot more children of those households that have a lot more escape parachutes if they fail let's say academically. Maybe their dad knows a hr manager at Raytheon that can get him a decent gig that can maintain a decent middle class lifestyle. The average person is very susceptible to their environmental conditions. So if there is a group of people born into a lot more wealth, the odds of more of the average people in that class "slipping through the cracks" and "failing upwards" as they say happens a lot more in a more wealthy community. It is very important to acknowledge that the vast majority of Asian migrants that came her came through merit based immigration which means we select usually the wealthiest groups of people from those Asian and African nations. Hence why Nigerian immigrants have the highest rate of PhD degrees out of any other ethnicity in America. It's because we selectively filter. So yes there are a lot more White and Asian kids in America "failing upward" or "slipping through the cracks". That's why these harrowing stories of individuals escaping poverty as proof that anyone can do it and "therefore black people are disproportionately lazy" narratives are silly. They don't according for this basic aspect of civilization. The "middle". The middle in a more wealthy community has more ways to fail upwards. That same middle in a poor community have less parachutes to fail upward
Hard to say. Sometimes the effects of discrimination are not so visible or obvious. I don’t know how to make reparations work. Limiting it to slave descendants seems a reasonable starting point. But then some people who are white today may also be descended from slaves. So do we limit it to the black population? Who qualifies as “black”? I know next to nothing about the proposals that have been put forward. Maybe there are ideas out there that are workable.
There are definitely a lot of valid logistical concerns and concerns about things like fraud. I mean there already is a industry full of fake Natives to take advantage of certain things. Now we'll have white people who claim 1/64th slave ancestry.
I can fully agree that the legacy of slavery and legal discrimination has negatively affected black Americans and still think reparations are inherently problematic. I think they will end up being more divisive than they will be helpful.
Living in Minnesota with a large Native American population and some very successful Native American casinos this is a big problem. Claims of who belongs in a tribe is a big issue. There is also resentment among both non Native Americans and tribes that aren’t located close to major population centers to benefit from gaming. On top of that there are scams and swindles targeting Native groups. Native American gaming isn’t reparations. It’s about tribes exercising sovereignty over their tribal lands. In that case there isn’t an issue of tax dollars going to pay to address a historical wrong. Even so there are still arguments made that the state should be curtailing Native gaming and hunting rights in the basis that it isn’t fair to others.
it sounds like you're saying that while the effects of slavery might be enduring, racism is not systemic.
It definitely is. I suggest you learn about what happened right after WW2 with redlining. It's actually probably the biggest reason for the wealth gap between white and black households today.
the implication that racism does not effect recent immigrants in the same manner as descendants of slavery.
That might be true (though it’s not exactly what I was saying). In any case, even that is very different from the suggestion that systemic racism doesn’t exist. Reparations are specifically to address the wrongs of slavery, not “systemic racism” which is a wider issue that relates to the legacy of slavery in some ways, but is not (to my mind) directly tied to it.
I'm sure these Mexican American citizens have a stronger claim from a broken agreement. https://abcnews.go.com/US/mexican-a...ancestral-lands-generations/story?id=73320792
If California is giving out reparations, why limit it to humans? what about the Orcas at Seaworld? They got it way worse than humans. They own them like 5 million dollars worth of mackerel @ROXRAN @Jontro @Os Trigonum
@Xerobull @Os Trigonum @Sweet Lou 4 2 @ROXRAN @Salvy @Rocket River @Jontro I figured this all out. KANG did this. proof:
The state plan seems more moderate ($220-350k) than the SF plan. It might be a good way to attract people to move to California as well, replacing the folks that have left in recent years. Not sure the Asian Americans over there would be excited about it though.
@basso Throwing money on a bad plan never works, even if it's a billion or more dollars. That money needs to go to fix their housing and crime problems, and create more jobs for everyone can't just be a place for super rich tech bros @FranchiseBlade
@Sweet Lou 4 2 @Os Trigonum @FranchiseBlade @Reeko @leroy @Jontro @J.R. Chappelle made this joke there, and notice how everyone laughed (cause it's true)
