Israel on ‘brink of constitutional collapse,’ president says, calling for delay to legal overhaul

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/world/article-netanyahu-israel-judicial-reform/

Benjamin Netanyahu’s bid to take political control over Israel’s judiciary has brought the powerful Prime Minister into a deepening conflict with the country’s vaunted tech sector and with economic elites who warn he is courting democratic disaster.

The latest plea for Mr. Netanyahu to reconsider came from Israel’s President Isaac Herzog, who in an unusual Sunday night address pleaded for a compromise plan that could modestly curb court powers to overturn legislation while preserving judicial independence.

“We are on the brink of a social and constitutional collapse,” Mr. Herzog warned. “The powder keg is about to explode.”

Same problem everywhere..... each religion is resorting to fundamentalism to maintain power.

Things are getting much more tense in Israel with reservists saying they will not serve to defend the country if this law passes. Also many American Jewish groups that are generally quiet about Israeli politics are raising concerns.

I've always wondered why any company would be headquartered in Israel. I imagine rockets flying around all day with grenades and gunfire.

Exceptionally strong national and religious preference. It's literally the holy land and religion is intertwined with everything there.

Of course you do, haha! That is not what Israel is like, dude. The United States has far more gunfire, along with more murder and rape.

Because Israel has a well educated workforce (at least in Tel Aviv). Israel punches way above its weight when it comes to producing tech startups. And no, Tel Aviv isn't littered with rockets and guns. You have to go out towards areas of Israel that border Palestinian communities (Jerusalem) or areas that are in the West Bank itself (or adjacent to the Gaza Strip).

Now with that said, Israel is having a brain drain problem as the profile of immigration to Israel has changed from well educated secular Jews from North America and Western Europe to poorer and less educated immigrants from Eastern Europe and Russia. Plus all of the population growth internally is coming from the Haredi community.

So there's a longer term question of whether Israel can sustain its thriving startup community but for now they'll keep producing successful companies.

I stand wholeheartedly in opposition to Netenyahu's approach to the situation, but I think you're lacking a little nuance here...
