All well and good. Does not automatically equate to a good defender. And doesn’t make direct comparisons to Draymond or Bam any less delusional. There is no great statistic to point to that proves one way or the other that he is capable of switching on to guards on the perimeter, but anyone who watches knows he is not one of the big men in this league capable of doing so.

    Other Data point :

There are 63 centers to contest at least 5 shots at the rim per game, Sengun is 48th out of those 63 in FG% allowed.

He gets the 12th most blocks and 9th most rebounds per 48 minutes in the entire NBA.

I do not believe he is the 9th or 12th tallest player in the NBA.

Actually, you are one of the folks who said he is "too small" (compared to e.g. Jokic).

But he gets more blocks per 48 minutes than Jokic?!

Can you please link to the source?

    Here are mine:

    https://www.nba.com/stats/leaders?StatCategory=REB&PerMode=Per48

As to the stat you quoted, I think whether the guards/forwards try to also contest plays a massive role. Not saying it is the only cause, but more often than not, I see Sengun being the ONLY one who is trying to contest, completely left on an island, unfortunately.

And yes, I don't think he is great at defending on the perimeter, as of now. But since almost nobody else is even making an effort, being asked to defend the rim and the perimeter at the same time is a bit...challenging.

I disagree. I would totally target Embiid the whole game. Make him run around on the perimeter all game long. Take him out of the paint where he is most effective. Tire him out so he isn't as efficient in offensive. It's why I don't think the Sixers can ever win. I just don't think Embiid can do it on both ends for 40 minutes in the playoffs.

I dunno how you can see that in this lost year. When he sits our defense is no better than when he plays. He has soo many blocks and deflections. But for some reason we had him playing drop coverage for half the season, nothing we are doing this year makes any sense.

He's got plenty of athleticism. Dudes been putting guys on posters this year. Getting chase down blocks. And he's only gonna get stronger and more in shape. What makes you think he isn't athletic? I haven't seen this many chase down blocks since Lebron.

lol 3rd in the offensive rebounding!

so theres ONLY 2 uber athletic black dudes IN THE ENTIRE NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION that rebound the ball on the offensive glass more than him?!

as a president of imaginary SOF society i feel ashamed for not knowing this

i should be dismissed from my duty pending immediately

btw a little bird told me if someone is the 3rd best offensive rebounder in NBA he is either very athletic or..... or....... or he is an alien and his alien brothers send him messages from the future with regards to where the ball is gonna bounce next

No, Mason Plumlee and Ivica Zubac are the two guys who get more offensive rebounds per 48 minutes.

And can you PLEASE leave the racial stuff out of it. Thanks.

Exactly as I said earlier. Data is explained away or the blame is passed on to teammates or coaching.

That’s a great breakdown of his strengths and weaknesses. It’s really fair and honest! This isn’t an insult, it’s just the truth. Hopefully he improves in some of these areas

well no team makes targeting Embiid’s defense the core of their game plan because he is too good defensively so Idk what to tell u

Embiid hemorrhaging points on defense will never be a thing…it often is for lumbering bigs like Sengun come playoff time

    Thanks.

Who, other than Jabari, Tari and Garuba (usually, only one of them is on the court at the same time as Alpi) do you think tries hard on defense/is a good defender?

We almost always get killed from the perimeter.

    Thanks.

    Edit:

I just looked at the stats you posted. So, according to that, opponents score a HIGHER FG% against Jokic (71.6%) in the paint than against Sengun (69.3%), and the difference between Sengun and Embiid is minuscule (opponent FG% is 69.3% against Sengun, 67.7 % against Embiid). @Reeko

    Thanks.

    Insightful.

Hassan Whiteside must’ve been 1 of the best defensive bigs in the league

Just watch this video of their elimination game last year. Sure looked like they targeted him all game,

Butler went for Embiid pick and roll basically the whole game and torched Embiids drop coverage. He has no chance against curry and better 3 point shooters.

I love looking at data. Let's not explain away data. Thanks @jordnnnn

Other notables who have almost the same opponent FG% in the paint as Sengun:

    Bam Adebayo
    Sabonis
    Poeltl
    Anthony Davis

meh, the whole team didn’t show up on either end for that elimination game

the fact of the matter is that the Sixers had a 108.6 defensive rating when Embiid was on the court last postseason, and it ballooned to 114.4 when he was off
