In DEFENSE of Alperen Sengun - Analysis on why Sengun may already be an above average defender

lets see what some decent coaching can do for him, and the rest of the guys. obviously, no one seems to be growing or getting better right now

It's funny that some of the same "he is only 19" defenders of Jabari forget that Alpi is not even a year older.

 

Size, length and athleticism.

 

Sengun is also not a center, its just your old fashioned basketball prejudice that little guys should pound the ball a lot, and big guys should be positioned around the rim...LOLOLOLOL

Or Sengun being advanced for his age is mentioned as something negative like he is closer to his ceiling, and being developed less is an indication of infinite untapped potential.

 

don’t think anyone is saying that Green can be hidden easily…Jordan Poole had issues defensively in last year’s finals and got his minutes reduced as a result

however, it is just much harder to hide a big man on defense

even guys like Steven Adams get taken completely out of the rotation in a playoff series because they are getting targeted so much…he went from starter to completely out of the rotation by game 2 against the Wolves

Adams was getting cooked so bad by the Wolves in game 1, I even called he’d be getting his minutes significantly reduced by game 3, and lo and behold

lumbering bigs become defensive liabilities, and Adams is known for his defense and rebounding

 

What are "the tools"?

He doesn't jump higher than Alpi, and he isn't really more athletic.

Green is more athletic, but far from being a better defender.

 

That’s the thing.. some would even bring up Brook Lopez as a big that isn’t switchable, but he’s a great rim protector! If Sengun can bring one of those to the table, I’d feel a lot better

 

He definitely jumps higher, especially after that lob he caught that one game. He has quick feet and moves extremely well, despite being stiff

 

Honestly, he doesn't jump higher.

Alpi's footwork is better. Alpi has a "thicker" base, but that actually makes him a BETTER post defender than Jabari. He has a stronger base. Somewhere between Jokic and Jabari.

Jabari still gets pushed out of the way easily around the rim.

Jabari is a better perimeter defender, he is a bit lighter on his feet than Alpi.

Jabari is usually more "locked in" on defense, especially on the perimeter. But he often loses his man.

I just don't see the amazing defense (yet).

 

Also, here’s proof that he has the tools.. you always say if we get Victor the starting front court should be Sengun, Wemby, and Jabari. If Jabari didn’t have the tools, you wouldn’t suggest him starting at the 3. Would you ever suggest Sengun starting at the 3 and guarding those guys? I don’t think so lol. Jalen’s IQ and effort needs to improve, as well as his strength. Those are things he can fix
