The thing is any defensive faults Sengun has doesn't really have to do with effort. Some of it has to do with him not being a great defender, sure but most of it is just horrible scheming and bad defensive communication leaving Sengun on an island against quick guards which shouldn't be happening.
Weird thing is yesterday I like the defense better. He actually showed on the pick and rolls instead of playing drop coverage. Got his hand up and Dame was just hitting ridiculous shots. Like its makes no sense to single Sengun out. When Dame hit those exact same shots on every single person we threw out there.
Pathetic how he just says this dumb ****, ruining Sengun’s reputation, breaking his spirit and potentially his interest in staying. What a clueless coach
All will be healed when Timman shows Erik Spoelstra Landry's fine dining and convinces him to ditch the Heat for the Rockets.
Alpi is clearly biting his tongue and being smart, blaming only himself. If I were him, I'd be like "**** this, I'm out of here as soon as I can, they are treating me like ****".
I'm glad Sengun has the emotional maturity to handle being scapegoated by his coach but it's still sad to see.
Ya these all just look like bad communication and multiple players, not just Sengun being in wrong spots and not communicating well. Don't know why Sengun is called out specifically by his hc. Really bad look on Silas' part. It sucks two fold in that I sincerely feel bad for Sengun and also SOFs are just going to be more unhinged.
To be fair, Sengun is asked to do too much. He's asked to drop cover and also stay with quick guards on switches. You can't ask a big man to do that unless they are elite switchable defenders like Bam. That's not Sengun's strength. We can't punish Sengun because he isn't playing at the level of an elite switch defender like a Giannis or Bam. Silas expecting that out of Sengun is pure stupidity.
I wonder if giving Thybulle the Lu Dort treatment was a Silas call or Sengun being lazy? If that's what he was told to do then this clip is a lot less bad. There are a few really bad plays and then a few that are fine.
That’s why he is simply not good enough. Not his fault, but you need to be able to move your feet in order to succeed in this era.
Moronic part is that he is critical of the Center for opponents PG scoring 71 pts. Was silas really thinking he could have won the game with alternatives by benching Sengun?!
Eh. If every NBA big had to have Giannis like switchability on defense there would be like 4 bigs in the NBA playing now.
Yeah, this is what every team with a good guard will do against us. It's what we would have done if we had Harden and went up against a Sengun-ish center (and it's what in fact we did do against a younger Jokic). It just is what it is. We have to work with Sengun's weaknesses by surrounding him with excellent defenders, or this will keep happening.
Exactly this. Also Silas has never known how to coach a bigman, he’s known and was brought here as a guard’s coach, so marginalizing the best player who happens to be a big man is also self preservation for Silas. If he can prove that Sengun is not worth building around, then he has a better chance to keep his job, because if we are building around Sengun then we need a big man coach like Denver or Sacromento assistants.
Alpi absolutely did not play good defense last night. The issue, neither did anyone else. We cannot guard a pick and roll with any of our personnel. We have no rotation, we either over or under help and can't recover/rotate, and we don't have anyone who can stay in front of their man. When Jabari got dunked on by Dame, he literally did not even make a move to go by Jaygup. Maybe a slight hesi? Either way, he blew by him like he wasn't there and Jabari tried to help at least. This is a MASSIVE issue without EG. We now have no one outside of KPJ and Tate who seem like they can or will stay in front so we don't have to help on every single possession.
Exactly - if defense only works with unicorn-level big defenders, then the problem isn’t the more mortal players - it’s the defensive scheme
