I fully expect that Tate would get played off the floor or be a big liability because he can’t shoot and doesn’t really do anything else at a high level to compensate guys like him routinely get exposed come playoff time
Thanks Sengun. Scoring explosions vs the Rockets this season: Damian Lillard - 71 Luka Doncic - 50 Lauri Markkanen - 49 Ja Morant - 49 LeBron James - 48 Giannis Antetokounmpo - 44 Anthony Edwards - 44 Trae Young - 44 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander - 42 Klay Thompson - 42 Klay Thompson - 41 Devin Booker - 41 Tyler Herro - 41
Almost all these players killed us from the 3-point line. Even Markkanen had 6 threes against us (and in that game, Sengun was better than Markkanen in rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, and had 20 points himself). Serious question, in what universe (other than Silas' head) is that all Sengun's fault? Is he supposed to guard the rim and the 3-point line at the same time?
A lot of it has to do with Silas' scheme on defense of simultaneously switching on screens and having Sengun play drop coverage leaving wide open shooters off screens. Not really Sengun's fault there. More scheming. This applies to all our bigs. They are asked to switch and play drop coverage. Just as an example, that's what the Timberwolves did when Golbert played against the Rockets and that's how Green got his career high. They had Golbert switch on screens while playing drop coverage. Leaving Green to have a lot of space in his middies and three point looks. We just do that every game.
The way we're handling screens vs elite shooters is crazy to me lol. Either play drop coverage and have the primary defender fight over the screen, leaving us vulnerable for pick and pops, or just switch it and give up the iso against our bigs. Anything would be better than asking our bigs to switch and drop, giving up 3s to Lillard/Klay/Luka. It's hilarious, but in the worst way.
Drop coverage never works with this bunch and it's just a regular season gimmick..... the big man has to move out of the paint a little and is basically trapped in this middle situation of either leaving his place or stay under the rim. He does neither. Drop coverage is brutal for bigs.
It also requires the team to work as a collective unit on the defensive end with communication and knowing when to rotate/cover. But we all seen how that goes.
Yes there are smart ways to prevent what Silas is doing but it requires practice and communication. Right now with our current guards (ironically besides Nix as he's a big boy) they are too young and sleight of frame to fight through screens consistently. Like we can't expect 185 lb Green to fight through Steven Adam screens. What we can do is when a opposing offense targets Sengun or one of our bigs like Garuba on a pnr possession is immediately have Sengun still drop, have one of our more versatile wings like KMJ or Tari who have decent strength and quickness for their length switch on to pnr ball handler and have Green or whatever guard that was the initial defender run towards the assignment that Tari or KMJ was originally on. But that requires communication and practice that a competent coach instills.
Perfect example. KMJ does nothing to contain or even show on the drive by Lillard. This is all Silas and not implementing a defensive scheme. If we're going to play drop defense for Sengun, he'll be left on an island all night and it's not his fault. Edit: KMJ is atheltic enough to at least 'show' on that drive by Lillard and still have time to recover if Lillard dumps it off to the shooter. And also poor attempt on Jabari not making a move either when his man is near the paint area too. Start at 0:35 seconds.
I love that the guy who (jokingly) started this thread to provoke the Sengunatics is now defending Sengun, in light of the unfairness by Silas, lol.
Ive actually been a huge fan of Sengun way before this thread. I only made it because some of these SOFs taking any 'criticism' of Sengun to the extreme which has become extremely annoying.
As much as enjoy and get a kick out Sengun fans. The whole coaching staff seems to have a gripe against the dude. It seems as if they’re setting him up for failure. While I don’t think he’s a franchise level player yet, (still has a lot developing to do) he’s definitely a franchise foundational piece that doesn’t really deserve being singled out. The coaching staff is ass, they’re like the old School football coaches who would run Darren sprolles or hybrid thin Running backs/wr up the middle to establish the run.
I know, and I actually agree. Some are taking it way too far, and that just gives ammo to those who have a bias against Sengun - they then try to throw everyone who legitimately supports Sengun into a "SOF" basket.
This time KMJ has the right idea of dropping down to help contain but this time again Smith is just watching. And at this point with Lillard going god mode, its inexecusible by Smith to not drop off his man and help. Start 5:13
At the end of the day as much as people rag on our starting backcourt, the talent level drop between them and the rest of our guard rotation is so massive that of course even with their shot chucking ways, at least defenses aren't just honed in on one player they think has any self creation talent when those two are playing.
