They've been introduced gradually over the last few years into the minor leagues, so they've been tested out and MLB has decided they work. No need to drag out the changes if they think they are good for the game.
People whining about "changing the game" This is the pace baseball was played at for a century. It wasn't until very recently that batters started needing 20 seconds to "compose" themselves and pitchers felt the need to wander around the mound. Jesus its like people complaining about basketball "man they inbound the ball and dribble up the court too fast" or that football needs longer huddles.
It was talked about a lot during last season that it would start in 2024. This season every AAA stadium will use it.
This is an issue that will take time to develop. Check back again at the deadline and every few weeks thereafter. I expect it to take a toll on the older pitchers that will be easy to see by the time the playoffs begin.
Didn’t really happen when pitchers were working fast (or just normal) in previous eras… and they pitched a lot more innings and a lot more games in general back then too. Younger pitchers who’ve never worked fast are the ones who are going to have to adjust the most. They don’t have the instinct or experience of what to do when the situation gets sticky.
Exactly. Go check out a complete game from the 70s. The guy got he ball back on the mound, the batter never left the box, pitcher gets the sign, gets in to his windup. Very rare was there ever 10 seconds between pitches.
