Why is this suddenly a breaking story making the rounds?

There were tons of calls and mails that came in regarding Kavanaugh, and it shouldn’t be too surprising that at least some of the accusations were fabricated by people who opposed his nomination on political/cultural grounds.

 

And it would be an indication that the vetting process of Democrats doing their investigations is sound as their allegation didn't get propped up and was promptly ignored. I'm pretty sure any credible journalists who were reporting on potential victims first do the basic investigation of whether the individual ever physically crossed paths with Kavnanaugh. If that basic threshold can't be met, the accusation isn't reported on by at the very least credible reporters.

 

the fabrication is not new; the third Grassley letter is. that's the story.
