Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for the U.S. to be separated by red and blue states and for shrinking the federal government in a tweet on President's Day, the latest in a string of controversial statements.

“We need a national divorce. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government,” Greene, R-Ga., said in the tweet. “Everyone I talk to says this. From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are done.”

The U.S. fought a civil war in the 1860s after a group of southern states tried to secede to preserve the legal enslavement of Black people.

Green has been known for her controversial statements — from claims about supposed Jewish space lasers’ starting wildfires to accusations that Muslim congresswomen weren’t legitimately sworn in because they didn’t take the oath of office on the Bible. But there have been indications she has been trying to rebrand herself as someone who can bridge the divides in her party as she angles to be Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate, NBC News reported last month.

Green isn’t the first Republican to call for some form of secession, and there are indications that support for secession has been growing since the 2020 elections. A June 2021 poll by Bright Line Watch and YouGov found that 66% of Southern Republicans supported leaving the U.S. and forming a new country. Support was also high among Democrats in the West, where 47% supported a division.

Broke: breaking up the United States due to the cultural wars
Woke: realizing that both parties prioritize economic growth and wealth over people since the post civil war reconstruction so they focus on cultural differences instead of class
Bespoke: joining that elite class and promoting culture wars so no one notices profits over people.

I think the US would be better served with a secession from this idiot.

Seriously, when has a sitting Congress member suggested secession openly, since the civil war? Honest question.

So, her initial thought is kind of how the country was initially founded, imo.

After that, she just thinks all red states should follow her beliefs and that if you don't, you're wrong.

She should be removed from office for even suggesting something like this.

I am totally down for this. Red states win some local culture wars and lose enormously on economics.

Companies would have to make blatant location choices instead of just minimizing local tax rates (and in truth, they already are making more difficult cultural choices for their employees). Um, wanna move to our new HQ? You, er, wouldn't, like, have reproductive freedom anymore, and you'd have to sell a bunch of your books that are banned here, but, um... you could have a four-bedroom house, with a two-car garage! The power grid also usually works, give or take.

Blue states would no longer have to support red states?

The relationship is fairly symbiotic. Wealthier states get and refine inputs from poorer states and in return poorer states gets subsidies from the wealthier states.

    b**** knows how to fundraise.

Yeah, let's have secession. California grows a great percentage of our food and has a gigantic GDP. But let's cut those goddamned liberals free.

This really would not turn out well for the "red" states on the whole.

Also, where do toss up states end up?

Also who decides what is a red state and what is a blue state? The last time I checked both of Georgia's Senators were Democrats

That was my first thought too. GA isn’t a red state.

The red state blue state divide ignores that there is really a divide within the states. If TX wanted to secede and join AL and MS in a new confederacy there’s no way Houston, Dallas and Austin go along with it. There wouldn’t be a war between the states but a war within the states.

I wouldn’t put this beyond that MTG believes such a thing could happen but I suspect this is just more rhetoric to rile up the base and raise money.

For this to happen, it would probably need to be a three-way split. West Coast (Blue), Central / South (Red), Northeast (Blue). It could be a "soft divorce", i.e. we would still have a "United States of America" for national defense and homeland security. The three regions would be responsible for everything else, including entitlements. The USA could become sort of like the EU, retaining a common market and currency, and open borders between the three.

But this would be the effective end of liberal democracy in America, as you would have one party rule in each of the regions. Right now, the States are the least democratic part of our Union, as most states have a governor and both chambers under the control of one party. We would end up with the equivalent of one Orban and two Obradors, plus a General running the "national" government. The better choice is for us to figure out how to work together. Even if we can't, keeping the same broken political system is better than the alternative. Our political system is the only real thing that is screwed up in our country. Our business systems and economy works pretty good, compared to the rest of the world. And our military is the greatest the world has ever seen. So be careful killing the goose that lays the golden eggs . . . .

Yes, this should happen. However, the states shouldn't split by political leanings, but rather by SOFs and non-SOFs. @Os Trigonum please confirm.
