Remember that one game where they let Jabari feast from the mid range? And literally have never allowed him to do it more than once every few games ever since? That was awesome.
Sounds like a cop out, if you could actually answer the question, you would have. You can't draw up plays for him to shoot, because he can't shoot, you can't draw up plays for him to get the ball in the post, because he has no post game, you can't draw up plays for him to ISO because he can barely dribble a ball..... I guess you could draw up plays for him to get uncontested dunks....because that's about all he's capable of, but honestly there's better players on the team to draw those kinds of plays up for. Honestly, no team draws up plays for the worst offensive player on their roster, no matter when they are picked.
They don’t run plays for him, which has lead to him having to be more and more aggressive (it’s help improve his driving) - his post ups still need alot of work …. specially with him being 4th-5th option for most of the season
I hate to say it but if he does not improve by next year he needs to be no higher than the 8th or 9th option maybe the 12th. Hopefully we hire a real coach that can help him otherwise he is just a so-so defensive specialist. TBH there is no way to fully judge him until we see how he does under real coaching.
Look, I know many people don't understand this but shooting is largely confidence based. If the only shots you get are shots you're not even supposed to get, it makes it a little harder to hit those shots. If those shots are only shots you can get when you can take them, then it makes it that much harder to hit these shots. Literally every shooter that's ever played the game will attest to this. There is no arguing it. Curry talks about the importance of confidence, Miller did, etc etc So why would they? They came into this season with the goal of developing players, how in the world do you develop a player as an offensive player when you run no plays for him? But this isn't even news, this is how Silas likely sees rookies, he did this to Sengun who...btw...was not a good low post player last year? Why is that? Why was Sengun's PPP in the low post bad? PROBABLY because his coach had no confidence in running it, probably because he did not get many live reps doing it, probably because yeah he's a rookie, he's going to struggle. But Jabari should be getting plays run for him, no doubt, especially as mentioned above nights he actually DOES get hot for am oment then the team decides he doesn't exist. Now, at first look people thought "Are they freezing him out?" well now we have the answer, they aren't even looking for him because he's really not part of the play at all. The sad part about it is he should be, defenses STILL guard him at the 3 point line because they think he's still a danger there, that Silas has not thought about using this to create more opportunities for not only Jabari and other players is baffling to me. Also, saying he has no offensive talent at all is a massive exaggeration.
Not even one game but one quarter if we're thinking of the same game. He made like 5/6 shots from the free throw/elbow area in the first quarter and then Silas took him out of the game and he never took a shot from that area for the remainder of the game. The Stephen Silas special.
This is obvious. I posted about it about a month into the season. It sadly was obvious that Coach Silas did not watch tape of Jabari in college, because it was very clear how to utilize him offensively. It took the Rockets two months to even put Jabari the right place on the floor. Silas is TERRIBLE at utilizing the strengths of his players. He wants them all to fit into his scheme or play a particular way, and that isn't what his roster is best at. He has had that same issue with Sengun as well, he has just played so well that he has forced himself onto the court. He still isn't being utilized properly. Silas has created a monster with Jalen. He has not really reigned him in on some shots and he hasn't ran plays to utilize his strengths. This is what I mean when I say that a coach can be such a bad fit, that it can actually result in players learning bad habits that may never be broken. For example, I don't think Porter will ever dial it down after being told for two years that he is the golden child. Silas and the coaching staff need to go. Stone really should go as well but I suspect Tilman keeps him.
Rockets did Jalen the same way, they force players to develop their weaknesses vs catering to strengths … is it a great plan.., we won’t know til 3-4 years down the line (these players should be in college still)
Fascinating. Something must have come up or happened in the eve or morning of the draft on Jabari. Either that or Presti was playing misdirect which is kind of cruel but he is Presti for a reason. I still like that we got Jabari though cause I just feel like he’s always going to have value… assuming his shot improves which it just has to. His form is just too good to not be a halfway decent stretch 4/5. Channing Frye wasn’t anything special and had a very long career. Whatever happens with this roster this Summer I feel like Jabari will fit with anything and ultimately really help. Is he the next Kevin Durant or Giannis… no. Very unlikely not… but in 5 years I think we’ll feel good about the pick. The Silas quote is just… yeah. Get this guy out of here. You don’t run a “play-less” system for a team where only like 3 guys can order a beer. I swear this guy has only been around NBA superstar basketball and has no idea how to actually coach young players. This isn’t the Miami big 3 dude. These kids need to be coached.
Yep, this is my biggest fear. We're going to need a bit of a hard ass to break a lot of these habits and get these players on the right track. I've always said there is no structure with the team and that's the biggest issue.
This is likely very true and what Silas means is they have no plays for Jabari to get a good look. They do run stuff for Green and Alpi, they definitely do, but whose deciding to do what and when? That's the scary part, they don't have anyone on the floor to do that. But this hurts Jabari because when you have a play run for you, when you know the end result is going to be you shooting, you can shoot with that confidence. This shot is for me, no one minds if I take this shot because this is MY shot and if I do pass the ball that's cool too. vs Should I take this shot? I guess I'm open but...I've missed the last few shots...not sure if I should take it. I've talked about this a lot in game threads you can see the guys confidence sinking, some nights he passes up on multiple open shots, despite him being a 'shooter' and the coach sure isn't helping build this confidence.
1000 times this. How can anyone evaluate talent when there's zero structure or tutelage? I taught music for two decades. I never once saw a student win or place at a regional or state level competition that did not have either a good band director or private instructor (or both). Talent alone only gets you so far. If they weren't making millions I'd feel bad for these kids.
