there was a possession last night where he got the ball around the free throw line and Embiid was under the rim not even bothering to go out there, and Sengun passed up the easy jumper to run into Embiid and then pass it off…I can’t put stuff like that on the coaching staff

if he is wide open beyond the three point line or has some easy midrange jumper, those are shots he needs to at least make the defense think he will even attempt to take

I’m not saying he should be out there launching 5 threes a game and jacking from midrange, but unless the shot clock is winding down or the rare occasion he actually pulls a three while being given like 15 ft of space, I already know Sengun won’t even look to take a shot if he’s outside of the paint

He can shoot 60% on post-up baby hooks, but how many of those are u gonna get off each game on average? No threes, no midrange, no PnP. Those are all potential shot attempts that Sengun doesn’t even try to take.

Jabari still living off his reputation in college as a "shooter" which is ridiculous

Why are you so afraid of your boy trying to learn to shoot? It's almost like some parents don't want their kids to learn to ride a bike because they don't want them to fall.

Teacher to the mom: You know, your boy is really good. I suggest we move him to the gifted students class so he can excel even more.

Mom: No, no, nooooooooooooooo! He is already good enough. He is the top of the regular class. Why do you want him to be better? He has nothing more to learn!

The guy can hit them. It has NOTHING to do with an edict or whatever crazy excuse these guys want to make in his favor when this team would LOVE to play 5 out. Guy just nuts up when he's wide open I wish he had some of that Jabari confidence. Sengun NEEDS to shoot them to unlock not only HIS full potential, but the TEAMS also.

Stephen Silas has explicitly said he has told Sengun he doesn’t want him taking those shots. It’s on video. It’s not a crazy excuse.

So Sengun who is openly barking at Silas is going to listen to him? Cmon man. Does that explain his inability to shoot 15 footers too? So Silas only wants baby hooks now?

edit: and a quick search has Silas saying that he doesnt want him SETTLING for those shots. If Sengun is out there hitting 2/3 or 3/4 from distance routinely (Which I believe he can) nobody could say a word including Silas. Lucky for us though is that the coach next year wont force Sengun to shoot only baby hooks.

I agree with you that he should "expand his game" to that, and I don't see a reason why he could not do that.

I just looked at Sengun's FG% on jump shots so far (.329, 99-301), and it is not very good.

    Jabari's is worse (.326, 86-286), and Jalen's is only marginally better (.353, 223-631).

The difference is that Sengun has some shot types he is extremely good at and which he converts at a very high percentage.

But improving his jump shot should be an area of focus, so it becomes even harder for the defense to predict what he will do.

I'm still unsure whether these other guys have been given the green light to shoot from anywhere and he has been told not to do it, or if he just naturally tries to go for the higher efficiency shot only.

    P.S.: KPJ's is .384 (173-451) - better, but not great, I guess.

What an utter r****d. Sengun with a 3 point shot is a far superior player than a Sengun that teams can leave alone if more than 10 feet from the rim. The whole point of these awful seasons is for players to develop.

That's what I mean - but what is weird is that Jabari is worse at them, but seems to have the green light to take as many as he wants.

If a player has a wide open 3 pointer for this team Im pretty sure they have the green light. Sengun thinks about it and then defers. Jabari jacks them up. I would much rather Sengun shoot those and it has nothing to do with the coach just stop it.

I think it’s more of the latter

I’m sure the coaching staff wants him in the paint primarily and doesn’t want him mindlessly chucking jumpers, but I don’t think he’s under some no jumper policy

I didn’t say anything about his ability or inability to shoot. All I said was that Stephen Silas has told us on video that he does not want Sengun to shoot wide open 3s. If you want to blame him for obeying his coach you’re free to do so.

Im having a hard time finding the "Silas has told us on video that he doesnt want Sengun shooting wide open 3's" video - maybe you can help.

edit: hell looking at the game logs Alpie shot 2 threes in both games against the Kings this week going 1/2 both times - Did Silas yank him after that?

Silas said he shouldn’t shoot wide open free throw line jumpers too?

I just did a little more analysis.

Sengun actually GREATLY improved his jump shooting from last season to this one.

    Last season:

    upload_2023-2-14_11-40-28.png

    This season:

    upload_2023-2-14_11-41-28.png

These are the best jump shooters in the entire NBA this season, with > 100 jump shots taken:

    upload_2023-2-14_11-43-5.png

So yeah, you might not have guessed it, but he is already the best jump shooter on the Rockets:

    upload_2023-2-14_11-44-14.png

Alperen Sengun is our best player - he is our franchise player.

He needs to get more usage and more green light. That's all it takes for him to take over and impact winning more.

Wouldn't say he's the best as guys like KPJ and Green take like contested fadeaway threes. Like the degree of difficulty in Green and KPJ jump shots are much higher than the rest of the team. Not saying that's a good thing. It's definitely bad but it's context.
