tacitly acknowledging they don't know what they are, but they're shooting them down anyway.

We've replaced our reliance on spy balloons and high-altitude drones with spy satellites. The CCP's continued use of spy balloons is embarrassing for them. This incident has been more of a media frenzy than a genuine security threat. Of course, the US defense won't take anything lightly, but they already knew the limitations of spy balloons. Now, it seems like they might be overreacting due to recent media coverage and political pressure, as well as their own recognition of their past failure to detect the spy balloons.

It was also reported by the NYT.

"broke into pieces when it hit the frozen sea"

This was a statement made before collection, indicating that they already knew or expected this outcome, or possibly had visual confirmation.

No camera footage? Of course, and then shattered into a million pieces to never be seen again. But we got balloon footage that was way higher in the sky.

Terrible Trump likeness. Body is right but shouldn’t there be an eagle, guns and an American flag involved as well?

I don't think that's necessarily true. High altitude balloons are more manueverable, can carry droppable payloads, etc. I think they simply play a different role than satellites do. They have satellites too; so we don't really know what their ultimate purpose is with these balloons. Do agree about the overcorrecting - I find it bizarre (and a little unbelievable) that they don't actually know what these 2 most recent ones were. You'd think before shooting them down they'd have gotten good video and photo footage at the very least.

So basically when Biden didn't shoot it down, you complained about that.
When he does shoot it down, you complain about that.

And then you wonder why people think you're a joke.

    no.

I complained when we didn't shoot down a confirmed spy balloon before it had a chance to overfly the entire country.

now we're just shooting random **** down that we can't identify.

I havent seen the latest news but I would agree that shooting something down without clealy identifying it could be a big problem. I think the latest shootdowns might be an overreaction and some more transparency about this would be good.
