    Frozen or not hitting water after falling 8 miles is going to create a situation where rapid disassembly is possible.

    "frozen sea" is a fairly vague term, that sounds very cold, but I would not take it to mean it was frozen solid. if they'd written "it broke apart when it hit sea water that was frozen into solid ice" I might accept it.

    still, it's the times, so who knows.

    [edit] just realized your link is "today times live" whatever the hell that is. and it says "parts probably fell in frozen water..."

    seems like a weird thing to fixate on. the military clearly did not expect it to break up, and in this thread y'all have been worshiping at the altar of the military and intelligence expertise. are you now suggesting they're fallible?

    We sent lots of balloons over the USSR during the cold war. There have been lots over the US the last few years. I think it's really only become news because one was spotted by the public and so it became a big deal.
