Why does this country still allow business to pay wait staff under minimum wage? I am seeing more and more tips and other fees automatically included. Tipping is optional. Don't be bullied by other people's belief that you should tip a certain way. The business contract/transaction is between you and the business, not you and the employee. You are not obligated to fill the gap between the business and the employee nor should anyone feel pressured or should anyone pressure anyone else to fill this short coming.
Definitely ask the manager to remove the tip, not just walk out… especially since you’re a regular. I prefer lunch time Hibachi, so much cheaper and less busy.
I dont get habachis. I mean, its kind of a one time experience thing, right? I dont like overpaying for fried rice and over cooked steak more than once.
Never go back, obviously, and post your story on Yelp, giving them a negative review. After being put through that embarrassment, it's what I would do. Having said that, I always tip 20%, even on pickup orders, especially at my favorite eateries. I didn't tip that much before the pandemic, but with inflation and the difficulty the places I like have in keeping staff, I do what I can to help. At the table, 25% if it was truly exceptional service and there's several of us.
As a white male im sure you haven’t dealt with thsi, but unfortunately minority families out at restaurants frequently receive subpar and sometimes disrespectful service that prioritizes the white families. The incentivized service is often times all that guarantees that people will treat them & their guests with respect. Yes we get it , people in the service industry are overworked and survive on tips, we’ve all done gigs in it. So how does that presclude you from A) being polite B) and should something arise like a delay just touch base with your guests and apologize. Almost every patron will understand It seems like people that don’t really deal with this are the first to scream foul.
I never would have brought race into but okay. Money is money and giving it away shows you shouldn’t have it. Over compensation for nothingness is counterproductive. Rewarding bad behavior but expecting a change is a waste of one’s time and money.
Bad behavior by owners who generally underpay or short staff makes it easier for wait staff to behave badly. I still tip 15% for subpar service but I've never had a waiter stop me on my way back to the car. The restaurant or mgr should state gratuity is included for parties more than 5. At that point, I would start grilling the manager as to why my lips are parched.
Some of you guys are enablers. "Geez bro, was that worth it for 3%". I would say, yes, yes it was. The job is simple, bring me drinks/food/refills, and I give you what society expects me to pay now-a-days. If you don't meet expectations, I will evaluate the situation (is the restaurant understaffed, is the restaurant busy, etc etc) then give you what I think you deserve. If you go above and beyond, meaning you were doing back flips while handing me my food, then yeah, maybe you deserve a little bit more. We are expected to subsidize the wages of these individuals. As a waiter, you must meet your end of the unwritten contract. Those of you tipping 20-25% for ****ing take out, thanks a lot for making our meals more expensive. I mean, I had to get out of the car and go ask for my meal. Yes I get it, a waiter had to put the order together and include the napkins and utensils, and for this you all want to pay 20-25%?? Alright, rant over. Everyone should be like street to kitchen, tell the customer, we charge you a 22% service fee to pay our staff decent wages and be done with it. You want to tip extra, then be my guest, otherwise, don't worry about it, it's already included.
Not usually, there are requirements to put it on there and a lot of places a manager has to put it on there. It’s part of the bill, if he doesn’t like it, then tell the supervisor. You don’t walk out like that.
A tip is voluntary, unless it's announced in advance that there is a mandatory service charge of x% for groups over y people.
Yeah, that’s not how it works I’m reality. If it’s on the bill, if you don’t contest it, you are expected to pay it. If you get up and walk out, there is a good chance you will be stopped.
