If Pop music is better defined, it might be the 1950's that paved the way for Pop music.

clearly the answer is the last ten years . . . so the period between Feb. 3 2013 and Feb. 3 2023

 

That definition is far too broad.

People that like Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean might not like Beyonce.

Those that like Beyonce may or may not like Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga.

Some people like The Chainsmokers and some people like Korean boy groups.


When I posted in this thread, I was expecting you to define Pop music more narrowly such as women singers.

Then for quite a few, Aretha Franklin would be cited as an influence.

For Aretha Franklin, singers such as Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward and Billie Holiday would be cited as having influenced her.

 

This isn't one of the songs that Aretha Franklin is famous for, but maybe somebody currently popular picked up a few pointers from her cover of this song.

I guess I’m not qualified to answer the question because I don’t listen to terrestrial radio and therefore don’t recognize, or at least listen to, the bulk of the artists on the current billboard top 100.

Isn’t a lot of pop that’s made now very formulaic and driven by big data anyway? So influences would vary, right?

I listen to everything except pop country. I make stations on Pandora based on songs or artists I discover and let the music genome project feed me similar music. Then when I get tired of that music or the mood hits me I’ll shift over to another station/genre and discover a new song or artist that has made it into that station and create a new one from that new song or artist.

I will go down memory lane every now and then but I tend to get bored with old music or artists. There’s also so much to listen to in the world, it’s a shame for me to limit myself to the same songs over and over for the rest of my life. I don’t think I had a hard end to my formative period like most people. I like new things.
