Lance Z is convinced the Texans will trade up to 1 to take Young, in part to appease the fans. No fan that pays attention would be happy with that though. Even people that want Young don’t want to trade up for him. Seems like something Cal would have to force.

Agree, play the draft, don't let the draft play you. We're at #2, if the cost is CLE 3rd to move up to #1, and Young is absolutely your guy than do it, but giving up more than that seems problematic given our lack of talent.

I'd rather stay at #2 take BPA (likely a defender) and then use #12 to get more draft capital, unless someone slips that makes sense to move up or you can move back and get more draft capital.

I am very curious how much of a FA magnet our coach now is. Teams like the Bengals turned quickly because they drafted Burrow and he was a clear draw for other talent.

I don’t love any of the QBs this year but assume we might take one. Leaning into the above I favor a heavy offensive draft this year. Stock the weapons, maybe grab Young or take a chance in later rounds at a dart throw QB, but rely on Ryan’s as a FA defensive draw.

Would be cool to start with Anderson up top and then lean into the offense the rest of the draft (WR, TE, OL) and either throw a late pick at another team’s backup or a FA QB with hopes you can grab your franchise QB next year with a loaded cabinet of weapons.

Take best QB at 2, BPA everywhere else, with heightened importance to WR and RB, use FA to plug as many holes as possible, ideal 1 major signing and several mid-tier signings with the hope that Demeco gets a higher level of play out of the mid-tier guys

FA2, then D-other. My philosophy is when team is really bad and you just want improvement, to plug holes with as many decent players as possible. And the right bigger names.

Best player available in draft regardless of position is nice. Though I'm still for addressing areas of need even if its obvious. Like, if a particular position is a real weakness, go ahead and draft 2-3 of them. If multiple positions have needs, or in Texans case basically all, take BPA but round the positions out. (Trading down for additional picks works for me)

2011 the addition of Wade Phillips, signings of big name Johnathan Joseph and mid tier Danieal Manning were huge. Drafted big talent JJ Watt & mid tier Brooks Reeds, then a really horrible defense became great with 2 studs, 2 mid tiers, better coach/system. And complimentary pieces both sides of ball

That would be such a bummer and huge mistake. Not because I dislike Young at all, but because the Texans would be falling for the bait. Its time for Caserio to earn his check and that not by "appeasing the fans".

I'll laugh if this idiotic team trades up to #1 when they clearly had the damn pick if they...........

That is an interesting way of looking at it. I think it comes down to how good they think Young is. The worst thing would be to trade up to #1, AFTER losing the #1 pick, and then have Young not be as good as Stroud. That would be pretty bad.... although I guess losing out on Young, and him becoming a Hall of Famer is pretty damn bad too.

I don't really trust the people making the decision on the qb for the Texans. Picking a qb is already hard, but the Texans don't exactly have any offensive geniuses to lean on.

Yeah, which is why I wanted them to trade down a couple of times from #2 if the offers were strong enough. Get 3-4 first rounders by dealing down a couple of times and fill multiple holes, especially rebuilding the lines..... the problem is I no confidence in the people that will make the decisions on who to draft. I don't know what type of talent evaluator Ryans is, but I by default, have more confidence in him than anyone else.

Thanks for the hard work that went into this, but I think we could do better for 1-2. I think passing on carter to anchor your defense for possibly a decade would be a huge mistake. Chicago is most certainly going to trade the number one for a qb starved team. I also think we should get more for cooks. If we can’t do better I would just keep him. If Chicago stays put and takes carter I think the 1-2 will garner a huge return.

From that list, I hope we look at these guys and sign 2-5 of them. Ideally, 2 of the Top 3 below and 2-3 of the next 7. If that gets done prior to the draft then Nick and DeMeco will have more options to consider.

Wanted to share this article as its a former scout's perspective on how teams should perhaps reshape their draft philosophy. Yes, it supports the point that several of us have suggested about drafting a QB early, but I think the point he makes--is that it takes time to develop QBs has me rethinking a taboo subject--Davis Mills. Pause incoming spears and just hear me out. BTW here's the article... https://firstroundmock.com/2022/12/time-for-nfl-teams-to-rethink-draft-strategy/

I'm falling in love with a lot of prospects that are not the Top 4 QBs. As I listen to DeMeco talk about the kind of team he wants to build and the type of players he's looking for, I'm enthralled by the potential of some of the prospects we can add in this draft. I've changed my selection on the Draft Poll to BPA at every position.

My #1 is Jalen Carter ( https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/Jalen-Carter-DL-Georgia ). I want him bad, because he's an elite difference maker for our defense. He's also a tone setter that I believe will help Coach D turn this team around. When he talks about wanting "great players and building around" the QB, that's what we should focus on for this year's draft. My fear is CHI takes him at #1. Before, I'd have said take Will Anderson at #2 if that happens, now I think I'd trade out of #2 and try to get more #1s this year and/or next with some additional picks (believe this has been @Nook's contention from the beginning). Carter is the best DL available in years and would be a cornerstone of our team.

At #12, I think there will be a lot of exciting players available. It may also be a pivotable spot for certain players and could garner trade interest as well. Current mocks are mixing a lot of the same guys in RD1, but I think there will be a lot of guys we're not seeing there now climb the boards or surprise us on Draft Day.

Loved Coach talking about the Elijah Mitchell draft example. The takeaway for me is that he wants to do what's best for the team and that should work in collaboration with Nick, our scouts and new coaching staff. BPA seems to be what this means and I'm on board. Maybe Young or Stroud is BPA for us at #2, if that's the determination, then I'll support them. However, I'll be ecstatic if we get Carter at #2 and a defensive stud like Van Ness or Drew Sanders (who are both difference makers) at #12. For our 2nd Rd pick, I'd love to see us get a difference maker on offense--could be a C (Schmitz), WR (Flowers or Downs) or best TE that slips. In the 3rd a Speed RB (Achane or Spears) would be nice.

Yes, that approach would not draft a potential QB1, but it gets to Coach D's point of building around the QB and adding "great players" at other positions. I wouldn't mind seeing what a creative young OC could do with Mills. He's had 2 different OCs in his first 2 years, now he'll have a third, but Coach D talked about giving players an opportunity to use their natural abilities (Stingley is most often cited), but maybe Mills still has something we can squeeze out of him. Ok, launch spears at will. :D

In any case, I'm excited about our team, Free Agency, Draft, and even new Uni's in the future. It's nice to finally have some positivity and optimism for football again in Houston.

    Stay thirsty my friends, salute!

A lot of good thoughts here and some work went into laying this out. Thanks for sharing, here's a few comments from my perspective...

On the Draft, I really like everything you laid out after RD1. Not a fan of either of those picks, but after those you killed it! Some of those guys will likely be drafted higher, but love all of those prospects.

As for FA, I'm torn on Jimmy G. On paper it makes sense, vet QB that both our HC and GM are very familiar with. He's certainly been a winner, but dude can't stay on the field. He's probably best choice if a vet is route we want to go. Slayton would be a interesting guy to add to our WR corps and I love Edmunds with DeMeco's LB love. Believe we should definitely add Jimmy Ward to partner with Pitre, and help lead our new defense. Definitely would resign O2 he was a revelation this year and should only get better.

    If they added

Carter and Sanders in the 1st

And added Ebukan/Edmunds/Ward in FA the defense would be top 15 if healthy.

If Ryans was to go that direction

My picks would be on offense the rest of the draft.

    2-32 Schmitz or Mauch
    3-64 Achane
    3-73 Micheal Wilson WR Stanford
    4-103 Payne Durham TE Purdue.

I think Lance is a pretty good evaluator of talent, but I haven’t ever heard he has any inside info. I’m pretty sure this is speculation and a little bit of click bait, especially about trading up.
