trying to find some temporary band-aid, just because you're full rebuild is still in it's earliest stages is far from the way to go. Like I said this is a typical Tilman/Patrick type move cause they had no idea what they were in store for since both are idiots that put the rockets in this position to begin with

Now they want to pick up ok players that aren't actual stars just so they can say they aren't the worst team in the league. Instead of winning maybe 20 games, they might reach 30 and call that a win. LOL just dumb

Fit is overrated - the team sucks and hates playing basketball at times, that's not hard to fit with.

I know people crap on john Collins defense but, from the article:

And there’s no denying Collins would make the Rockets a better team, especially on the defensive end. Collins has been a positive defender for the Hawks in every season he’s been with them, with this season’s impact — a plus-5.6 point defensive differential — among the 88th percentile of players, per Cleaning the Glass.

    • The Atlanta Hawks have been shopping forward John Collins for a while — per our Shams Charania — and have been gauging interest around the league in potential packages for the 25-year-old, conversations that have included the Houston Rockets, league sources told The Athletic, which was later confirmed by team sources. The sources were granted anonymity to speak freely on the matter. There has been nothing concrete from the Rockets — merely ideas floated by the Hawks to Houston among other teams — but the interest is real.

Three years ago prior to Houston trading Clint Capela in what turned out to be a blockbuster deal involving four teams, The Athletic reported of the Rockets’ request for Collins, then 23, in exchange for Capela’s services.

Taking a few things into account — the Suns’ desire to move Jae Crowder, Houston’s with Gordon and the Hawks with Collins, there’s a three-team framework that could work for all parties.

    • Collins’ desire for a change in environment, his unhappiness with his situation in Atlanta and his want to be somewhere he is respected is understandable. Collins would also be a welcome addition to a youthful locker room in need of a veteran voice.

    • But the issue of a Collins trade, as the Rockets and other teams with interest are currently internally evaluating, is the fit — and all its accompanying factors. For starters, the forward is in the second year of a 5-year, $125 million contract signed in 2021. Bringing Collins on Houston’s books would eat significantly into their future cap space, one of the more positive things the front office is looking forward to this summer. The Rockets would have to juxtapose Collins and his opportunity cost, meaning they would need to determine if they would rather have Collins now or preserve maximum cap space for what figures to be a busy summer in free agency. There is also the question of positional fit.

    • The potential of free agency mentioned above applies to another frontcourt option who could be on the market, Myles Turner. The loss of Tyrese Halliburton and his All-Star level contribution has left the 24-26 Indiana Pacers reeling, losing eight out of their last 10 games and barely holding on to a Play-In Tournament spot. Should their slide continue, it’s not inconceivable to think Indiana could look to trade Turner and fully commit to the rebuild — especially with Turner’s looming free agency on the horizon. Houston has interest in the 26-year-old center from Bedford, Texas, but would hesitate to trade for an in-demand player who would command a sizable return of assets now, especially when they could wait until free agency to pursue.

It actually would be a win, it would be 10 more wins in a year where you don't control your draft

There's something to be said for trying to actually win games and not be the worst team in the entire NBA for 4 years. Like a full half- decade of tanking and The Process is too long.

And why do the Rockets not control their draft in that year? Oh that's right Tilman's dumbass. That's the consequences for doing so

I couldn't careless about winning 10 more games if even that. They'll still suck and be irrelevant. Collins does nothing to move the team forward in the long run for a full rebuild. He's nothing more than a temporary fix to not be last. instead, they'll maybe be the 20th worst team

John Collin's is the player you make a move for in 2017-2018 season. Even more so the following year when they LTS the hell out of the team and scrapped the bottom of the barrel for rotational players where they ended up with scrubs. He's definitely not the player you trade for in 2023 for a team in the full rebuild stage. Making $25 mil+ per for 3 more years

Thanks for posting that, I couldn't read the article because I don't subscribe to the athletic. But yeah literally all I meant by fit was "lets get some good defenders around our team full of extremely bad defenders." I haven't watched or paid attention to the Hawks at all this year and I'm only going off what I thought about him a couple years ago, which is that he used to be a bad defender. If he's a good defensive player I don't mind it. Honestly though I want someone who's going to bark at our players if they miss a defensive assignment. I want a veteran that's going to let you know every time you screw up. Someone that's going to bark at these guys like Jabari except with some veteran credibility.

Lol, ok sure. A team that rolls out big men like:

Jabari Smith (stretch 4 who can't shoot)
Tari Eason (interior player who can't make a layup and has the decision-making power of an abacus on offense)
    Usman Garuba (lololol)
    Bruno Fernando (because lololol above)

Won't "move the needle for winning" by adding in a 25 yo guy who has put up efficient 20-10 seasons in recent memory.

That's just stupid. The Rockets suck - this is not difficult.

Ok fine then don't watch - i don't think it's insane to want the Rockets to get incrementally better and it's probably smarter than tanking in a year where you're going to give your draft pick to OKC but other than lamenting past missteps I don't really get your alternative.

Panicking and doing this stupid trade is what will screw us in the long run. U play your youngsters and find a vet pg to control the offense. We need John collins when we had harden not now.

Giving up on Jabari and Eason is just plain stupidity.

I agree that we have a quandary with how Jabari and Collins would fit. both those guys are uniquely suited to play the 4, and it’s been interesting to see Tari come in and play minutes there as well. We certainly don’t want to do anything to hurt those guy’s development. But I’m just not sure that’s enough of a concern not to pull the trigger on a fair deal for Collins. We need length, defense and shooting; straight up we just need more talent. While I’m not in the Collins plays great D camp, I’m in the Collins plays decent D camp. Sengun, Collins and Jabari in the front court is a super talented mix. A good coach will know how to stagger the minutes and put guys in the right spots. Jabari coming off the bench is not the end of the world. In fact it might even be good for him. As long as he’s getting close to 30 min thing should be fine.

I mean I definitely don't watch as much as I used to. You don't have to tell me that.

There is no alternative. This is what a full rebuild is. You search for that player that is clearly someone you're able to move forward with. How long that takes is based on a lot of luck. trying to take shortcuts like picking up someone like Collins who's impact on winning is not that of a star is a terrible option. It reeks of panic & desperation but like I said typical Tilman/Patrick type move. Just like how they signed Theiss and threw $36 mil at him when no one else was ever coming close to that for such a mediocre player

I don't even understand this. They literally don't know what our core is and they're going to lock up a guy like John Collins for the money he's getting paid? And when you think about the possibility (albeit a longshot) that we could enter next year with Wembanyama, Sengun and Jabari already. And then Usman Garuba looking like he's a solid bench rotation guy. Where even is the need for Collins?

The only way this could make sense to me at all is if they feel that if they can flip Collins later for more or if this is part of a three team deal and we just don't have those details.

I personally think Jabari is a 3 eventually, but that’s with a 4 that can shoot as well. I’m not opposed to Collins, just not at the price they’re proposing

We do need to cash in the BKN picks and Gordon for an upgrade but Collins isn’t really enough. The disgruntled star market is kind of bare though. Only other options would be Myles Turner or maybe LaVine.

The full rebuild does not seem to be going anywhere fast. Part of it is Stone wanting to be a micromanager down to the coaching level and the other issue is the impending Patrick Fertitta take over.

I'm patient, rebuilds can take time, but in 3 years there has been zero progress, in fact it seems like we are regressing, which is shocking. No valuable free agent is going to want to sign with this team in the near future. At this point we will likely have to fix our team via trades, hope that the NBA gives us the 1st pick of the draft that year, and put actual good NBA players that want to mentor on the team.

John, while not moving the middle in a big way, will bring some veteran leadership, a positive defender, and maybe it will allow Houston to put Jabari on the bench while he continues to learn.

I think giving up the unprotected Brooklyn pick would be stupid, but other than that, I don't see too many issues with the trade. EG needs to be gone and KJ is not some spectacular prospect that we need to wait on. 2025 pick is lottery protected I guess, so for John Collins, it doesn't seem like a terrible trade, plus we get a lottery protected FRP back.

Just trying to clarify what you're saying, but I think I get it - you think we should tank for the #1 pick indefinitely until we draft someone that is clearly an all NBA/MVP caliber player very early, and until then we should avoid adding any veterans or making any incremental improvements to the team?
